These roaming workshops set their sights on such landmarks as the Space Needle at dusk, the skyline viewed from Alki Beach, and the ferris wheel on the waterfront. Workshops may also send students roaming via photo-scavenger hunts in Pioneer Square and Pike Place, taking them in search of photographable findings. About a week before the scheduled venture, students gain access to an online learning module meant to prepare them for the trip. Afterward, an online discussion board moderated by the instructor allows shutterbugs to trade shots and comments, and receive expert advice. Starting in January, these three- to four-hour classes will be held at least once per month, either during the day on the weekend or in the evening during the week.

The next cycle of Photography Fundamentals classes begins on Saturday, January 19, and starts roughly once per month. The first session covers light exposure, explains the reasons behind underexposure and overexposure, and reveals how to achieve the brightness desired using ISO, aperture, and camera-sized sunglasses. In the second class, Metering 101, students learn how to use a camera’s built-in meter as well as different handheld meters. During the third session, they'll make creative use of shutter speed to stop motion and blur time; the final class covers depth of field and all things that go into blur in the background.
The DSLR crash course runs about one Saturday per month from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. In the studio classroom, students learn the basics of exposure, their camera’s auto modes, and most importantly, how not to use their camera’s auto modes. Lunch and a practice session in the International District follow, tailed by a discussion of lenses at a nearby Starbucks. The class wraps up in the studio with a Q&A and a few practical tips about real-world situations such as dealing with digital files.
