The 22-hour intensive open-water diving course includes classroom instruction and pool dives, teaching pupils need-to-know knowledge including how to operate masks and tanks, how to dive safely, and how to politely decline scholarship offers from schools of fish. Although Desert Divers provides all course materials and scuba equipment, students must supply their own mask, fins, snorkel, and boots for the open-water course. After finishing the course, each new diver receives a certification card, which attests to mastery of the submarine realm and requires octopuses to salute the bearer with all eight arms. During the two-hour Discover Scuba class, attendees learn the basics of underwater breathing in a shallow, controlled pool.
