Born out of the DC-area institution, O'Brien's Pit Barbecue, Branded '72 serves up a delicious array of Texas beef brisket, Carolina pork, pulled chicken, smoked sausage, and Texas spare and Memphis dry rub ribs -- all to be enjoyed with a variety of sauces: o $15 for $30 of food and drink o Meats are slow-smoked over hickory wood for 16 to 18 hours to enhance flavor o Small-batch sauces are made from 50-year-old recipes o Everything is house made, from the sides to the desserts -- even the ice Smoked to Perfection Branded '72 takes great care with its meats -- three large closed barbecue pits behind the restaurant are outfitted with a unique fire wall that keeps the meat and wood separated. That kind of care helps to create the signature smoky flavor that makes the food at this spot so special. Staying true to prized, decades-old recipes takes a commitment to tradition, and it doesn't hurt that some of the staff have been here since 1974.
