half.com's customer service is atrocious. You are playing with fire if you order from them. The only leverage you have is if the seller cares about negative feedback, you can then use that as leverage to resolve a situation to your liking. I'd suggest you pay with credit card so you can dispute the charges. As for being a buyer, just like being a seller, customer service is non-existence. I recently sold 5 items on there for the first time in like 5 years. My direct deposit information was out of date and had a closed account on there. Well, they required my account number for an account I closed over a year ago. I was luckily able to find a current account I had linked with that expired one and got the information from that, but only after trying for 3 weeks to get a response from half.com on an alternative method to update my direct deposit information. I sent 3 emails over 3 weeks - no response. Buyer and seller beware, these guys are shady. I will only sell on here if I have no luck on craigslist or I don't feel like going through the hassle of setting up an auction on eBay. half.com are also hypocrites - they charge a certain amount for shipping to customers, but pass along a smaller amount, with them making money off the difference. You can't make money off of shipping - sound familiar - it's eBay policy with their new feedback system (sellers would lower prices and raise shipping so that eBay would get less commission with the old system). Fine, that's fair. They just need to hold themselves to the same standard.

I have bought and sold from half.com many times and have not had any problems yet. I haven't had to use customer service so I cannot attest to its usefulness. I try to stay away from the sellers who have thousands upon thousands of feedback ratings even though they have a rating of 93% or better. Check their feedback. That 7% adds up to hundreds of dissatisfied customers. There is a good chance that they are dropshippers. They don't have the merchandise on hand and have to order the books/cds/dvds from someone else which delays shipping. They truly do not care about a few disgruntled customers because they do such a high volume of business.

I've checked a few other used book websites and have found that half.com prices are better, especially when it comes to shipping more than one item from the same seller.

The site is setup like eBay, except no bidding. It is pretty straight forward... don't buy from a seller unless they have 99% feedback with a few hundred feedbacks and you will be fine. Unless you do have a problem with shipment, then it can be very, very frustrating.

half.com sucks. The website provide poor customer protection to its buyer. I bought a book from the website. After the estimated arrival date still nothing arrived. I contacted the seller. At first, the seller told me he has shipped the book right after he received the order. Later, he said he put a wrong address and he had corrected the mistake. But I found the address he put in email was wrong, again. I was freak out. I asked him not to ship the book. But the seller got back his book and insisted shipping it again to me 25 days after I placed the order and refused to refund me since the book is not in his possesion.

I filed claim to half.com. The website told me they need one month to investigate the transaction. One month later, they asked me if I received the book yet. After I told them yes, they said there is nothing they can do.

It seems that they don't care how long the seller keep me waiting and if I still want to buy after the seller default his obligation. The only thing they care is the commision they can receive from each transaction.

I have purchased/sold more than a couple textbooks from half.com and have always had a pretty good experience. I even purchased a laptop thru them! My experiences have been nothing but good to great.

I have bought from half.com successfully several times, and will do so in the future. I have one caveat for the rating systems: I was recently burned by a seller with over 150,000 feedbacks, 93% of them positive. It only occured to me that 7% negative is HORRIBLE in this setting after the book I ordered never arrived, and seller ignored all emails. The seller can afford to go ahead and charge the credit card of 7% of people without shipping the book! reading through those 7% negatives is difficult and sad as it seems that they are all identical: CC charged, no book, no answer to emails. Luckily VISA cheerfully refunded me!

Similalry need to be careful NOT to let half.com resolve this as it might make it impossible to dispute CC: 45 days for media mail, 10 days waiting for seller, 30 days seemes to be half.com average - leaves 5 days before the credit card's 90 day limit on dispute is reached!

I bought a book on half.com. Since I live in Hawaii and media mail takes forever, I waited patiently, as items sometimes take up to 2 months to get here. Well, I wait two months, forget about it for a while, then month three, I decide to try to resolve this with the seller. Well, you have 2 months to contest a charge, so I'm out of luck. My credit card tells me I have 90 days, so I'm out of luck there. Luckily, it was for a small purchase, but the point remains half.com does not protect the consumer at all. To compound issues further, half.com does not advertise their customer service email or phone number anywhere on the site.

Brand new to Fatwallet and saw this half.com forum. Yes, Customer Service is horrible (just automated computer responses...)and often shipping is slow but, most of my experiences have been VERY positive (like very often more than 50% off of "going for" retail price and getting the item within a week...). Yes, check sellers ratings and comments and be willing to pay a little more for a better comment record. Most sellers are VERY concerned about maintaining a good comment record and are usually willing to "make good" rather than receive a bad one so check with them before posting a (negative) comment.

Customer service is horrible. Half+eBay+paypal sent me a $10 coupon, which requires me to bid on eBay and then pay through paypal. After winning the product, found out the coupon was invalid. Emailing them for several times and only got some useless emails and then never heard from them again. So I have to pay for the product for the full price.

I have bought many books from half.com and ALWAYS it took like a month for my products to arrive. Like the other customer, the postage will say the item was shipped only two or three days before I get it...I also had a big problem ordering from people that would lie about having the book in stock. So always read the feedback. Since I have paid close attention I may pay a little more for my books but it's from someone that has a good feedback rating. I have a lot less problems and lately my books arrive in a week.
