I am an attorney and have had several tire stores as customers over the years, and got tires either for free, or for way below cost. Now, I am retired, I have to pay for them like everyone else. I actually worked in a tire store while I was in law school and know about as much about tires as anyone not actually working there (and perhaps more than some who do). I find that I can order tires, have them shipped to an installer near where I will be and have then installed with minimal problem. Cost wise, I might still be able to wangle a few deals, but overall their prices are much better than in the chains, clubs and big independents.
If I had one complaint.... I just ordered a set of tires for my daughter for a Christmas present (her choice!). I am in South Carolina, she is in New York. I picked a shop that I know near by, but the tire are being shipped to ME. When she shows up, they are probably going to give her a hard time, but the last time this happened, I called Tire Rack, they called the installer and it was resolved in about 90 seconds. TR should put in an option to have them delivered for installation by someone else.

Prices cannot be beat and Fatwakllet CashBack makes it so much the better. Their independent reviews/testing is very helpful in deciding which tire to buy. I like in MD, so when orders ship from their DE warehouse, they arrrive the next day.

I always buy my tires there. I would say overall good experience. Since I spend a lot of time buying tires for my cars and family members vehicles, I notice their website has some major problems and downtime though, they should get those issues dealt with.

These guys are on the ball.
I ordered a non-standard size tire for my car. Probably one minute after my order, someone from Tire Rack calls me to remind me to adjust the pressure for the different tire.
Their CC verification system seems to be awful picky, they wouldn't put my order through until I had a personal, landline phone number to give them (who uses those anymore??).
Also, I got double-taxed on tire disposal fees, but that's because (I assume) Tire Rack has a warehouse in my state. Paid disposal fee on ordereing and paid again when I had the tires mounted.
Still, Tire Rack is hard to beat price-wise and the reviews they have on their site are very helpful.
I used to just sort of point at a tire that was somewhere between the cheapest and most expensive model and hope I made a good choice. Thanks to the Tire Rack reviews I picked up a set of cheaper tires that rated a lot better than the more expensive models I probably would have purchased.
The tires I got are great, reviews were spot-on, and even after all the taxes and installation fees I saved about $50 versus the local tire warehouse for the exact same rubber.

Not sure if it compares to Costco? I will try it next time.

I visited WalMart, Sam's Club and Costco plus local discounters but none of them could give me the tires I wanted for my Tahoe. TireRack had them in stock at a great price. Shipping for four was $88 (ouch) and fitting them will cost just under $100 but at least I am getting the tires I want. I also think the review section is very useful and this influenced my buying decission. No tax helps a lot!

Prices are good. And I have several local shops listed that will install TireRack tires. But the very best thing are the reviews.
Previously, I was at the mercy of local shops or family and friends for advice when picking a tire. Consumer reports is ok too, however they only test NEW tires. A tire may perform completely differently when it is 50% worn out or 80% worn out. I LOVE the reviews on TireRack with the miles traveled. It has helped me pick out good tires the last few times I had to buy tires.
Again, the prices are good too, better than locally and no tax. Good prices, good selection, reviews..... I found some Korean tires for my Saturn, I never would have even considered them but they have great reviews and are cheap. And my Graspic DS-1 snow tires really are great and also cheap and long wearing.

Great place to buy your tires. I bought mine there and after shipping, it's still ~$8 cheaper than my local tire store.
Shipping only took a day even I chose the cheapest shipping option. However, shipping rate is kind of weird there. The shipping cost per tire is cheaper if you buy them in pairs. (ie. not 1/3/5)
About installation, I just bring the new tire from TireRack to my local shop to mount&balance for me.
One last thing, customer service is great there, only took 2 hours for them to reply my email.

I have started to shop for my tires mainly at Tire Rack. Their prices are very competitive, customer service is very good. They almost always have a plentiful inventory, with tire data, test data, user reviews. Shipping is fast.
