Hey Everyone,

Been lurking for a few weeks and really love the forums! Would anyone be able to help me, I am looking for a All Inclusive trip to Dominican Republic. Does anyone have personal experiences they would like to share pleasant or unpleasant when it comes to resorts?

I am going away with my girlfriend and the primary goal of this trip is to RELAX and eat. We prefer to book the all inclusives just so we dont have to worry about food when we get there but reading reviews it seems the food (at least in our price range) is always disappointing. We were using BookIt.com to find flight & Hotel packages under $2,000 and soon realized the price is never what it advertises as each screen click seems to add fees.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to sort through the extremely long list of destinations & resorts to find a deal that would suit us? Does anyone have experiences with a all inclusive that was relatively affordable and actually provided enjoyable food? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

<![CDATA[Viator Credit Card Data Breach]]> http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/travel-discussion/1391442/ Rating: 2 Posted By: burgerwars
Views: 1582 Replies: 7

Viator is a website where you can book vacation tours.

September 19, 2014Dear Viator Customer

We want to make you aware that Viator has experienced a data compromise that could potentially affect payment card data used to make bookings through Viator's websites and mobile offerings. If you have created a Viator account, this compromise may also affect your email address, password and Viator "nickname." We deeply regret any inconvenience this may cause. The protection of our customers' personal information is of paramount concern. We are dedicating all the resources necessary to investigate and resolve this incident.

We have alerted the credit card companies and law enforcement, in addition to taking appropriate steps to secure our systems. We are writing to make you aware of the occurrence so that you can also monitor your accounts as a prudent measure, and take any other precautions you believe may be appropriate. We are offering our customers in the U.S. free identity protection services, including credit monitoring.

Meanwhile, we are continuously working to strengthen our security measures to help minimize the potential for incidents of this nature in the future. While our investigation is ongoing, here is some important information to be aware of.

What Happened:
On September 2, we were informed by our credit card service provider that unauthorized charges had been made on a number of our customers' credit cards. We have hired forensic experts, notified law enforcement and we have been working diligently and comprehensively to investigate the incident, identify how our systems may have been impacted, and secure our systems. Although our investigation is continuing, we currently believe that some forms of your data may be affected by the compromise. This information includes encrypted credit or debit card number, along with card expiration date, name, billing address, email address and, if you have created a Viator account, the associated email address, encrypted password and Viator "nickname." At this time, we have no reason to believe that the three or four digit value printed at the back or front of your card was compromised. Additionally, debit PIN numbers are not collected by Viator and could therefore not be compromised.

Steps You Can Take To Further Reduce Your Risk of Identity Theft/Fraud:
We recommend that all affected customers monitor their card activity and report any fraudulent charges to their credit card company. It is always a good practice to review your credit and debit card account statements regularly for suspicious activity. If you notice suspicious activity involving your account, please report it immediately to the appropriate financial institution or credit card company. You will not be responsible for fraudulent charges to your account if you report them in a timely manner.

To assist our customers in the U.S., we are offering free identity protection services, including credit monitoring. More information on that offer is below.

Additionally, we encourage you to reset your Viator password the next time you sign in to your Viator account, and change it on any other sites where you used the same password.

To change passwords on the Viator site, click on the "Change Password" on the "My Profile" tab, once signed in. Here are some tips to help you create a strong password: (1) make sure your password is at least six characters in length; (2) combine numbers and letters and dont include commonly used words; (3) include punctuation marks; and (4) mix capital and lowercase letters. It is also advisable to use a different password on different sites.

If you have questions related to this situation, you can contact us anytime through our dedicated toll-free information helpline at 888-680-0710 or at 702-939-9819. 1

Responding properly to this incident is our top priority, and we are committed to taking all appropriate steps to safeguard your personal information. For over 10 years, Viator's mission has been dedicated to offering travelers the best tours and activities worldwide, and to delivering a superior experience in all our customer interactions. That mission continues. We deeply regret any inconvenience or concern this may cause you and we thank you for your patience as we continue our investigation. We are focused on doing everything possible to maintain your trust so that we can continue to serve you in the future.

Fraud Alert
You may consider placing a fraud alert on your credit report. This fraud alert statement informs creditors of possible fraudulent activity within your report and requests that the creditor contact you prior to establishing any accounts in your name. To place a fraud alert on your credit report, contact any of the three credit reporting agencies identified above. Additional information is available at http://www.annualcreditreport.com.

Security Freeze
In some U.S. states, you have the right to put a security freeze on your credit file. This will prevent new credit from being opened in your name without the use of a PIN number that is issued to you when you initiate the freeze. A security freeze is designed to prevent potential creditors from accessing your credit report without your consent. As a result, using a security freeze may interfere with or delay your ability to obtain credit. Additionally, if you request a security freeze from a consumer reporting agency there may be a fee up to $10 to place, lift, or remove the security freeze; however, this fee may be less in certain states (in MA, up to $5). In order to place a security freeze, you may be required to provide the consumer reporting agency with information that identifies you including your full name, Social Security number, date of birth, current and previous addresses, a copy of your state-issued identification card, and a recent utility bill, bank statement or insurance statement. You must separately place a security freeze on your credit file with each credit reporting agency.

I might be looking too early for this but I need some advice about what's the cheapest way to buy tickets for following time:

  • Travel: From Los Angeles, CA [I can fly from Long Beach (LGB) and Santa Ana (SNA) too] to Tamp, FL (TPA is the airport code)
  • Date: Saturday 13th December (Saturday) thru 20th December (Saturday). +/- two day is okay.
  • Numbers: Four Passengers (Two Adults and two kids, 3,5 ages)

I know it will be almost a Christmas time and ticket won't be cheap but I want to get an idea about how much of monetary damage I am looking at. I searched via Kayak and Southwest and I found $425 and $474.00 respectively. For family of four, it will be around $1700.00...that seems quite expensive. I know I am going from West Coast to East Coast but I want to get an idea about any alternative airports I can fly for cheaper price.

Please help out fellow FW.

This morning, a Euro-Blog published this 14000 mile itinerary with some interesting stopover possibilities and an opportunity to experience the Boeing Dreamliner.

I've verified availability/price on Nov 1 out Nov 22 back via Google Flights and ITAsoftware. Other dates through March 2015 should be available. One 20 kg bag flies free.

Longer Stopovers are bookable and will probably boost the price via a call to Royal Jordanian.

If nothing else, this promo shows you how overpriced on a cpm basis domestic USA flights to/from non-hub airports can be.

Visiting Boston, MA some weeks ago, stayed in Beverly, MA and drove into Boston on Sundayvia the Mass Pike. There was a notice of a toll which I was prepared to pay, however, there were no toll booths. I received a letter from the rental car company that MassPike - TC has assessed me a charge of $4.85 and a fee of $13.00. Would be great if the Ma Highway Department put signs up informing visitors of the inflated charges. Boston is kind to tourist.

Taking my grandson to India the 1st week of November. We have our passports and all necessary paperwork to apply for the tourist visa however several friends have recommended that we go through a visa service such as passport express rather than completing myself.

Being frugal, I hate paying the extra $100.00 pp over the cost of the visa just to have someone else review the paperwork and send it on. OTOH ... if it is more complicated than I'm expecting, I have non-refundable plane tickets and don't want to take an unnecessary risk.

Any advice from people who have completed the paperwork themselves and those who used a service, would really be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

<![CDATA[Best way to book Four Seasons hotel trip?]]> http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/travel-discussion/1390328/ Rating: -4 Posted By: CorradoJr
Views: 1750 Replies: 4

My wife and I are celebrating our anniversary and we will be booking a week at a Four Seasons property in Asia. This will be an expensive splurge for us and we are trying to figure out the best option to maximize rewards, CashBack, etc. Our options seem to be:

1. Book directly through Four Seasons
2. Book via a travel site (Expedia,Travelocity, etc.) and a partner site like ShopDiscover. This will get us 5% CashBack from Discover as well as points with Expedia for future hotel, flights, etc. (need to research Expedia's rewards program, not sure how much benefit it provides).
3. Use another 3rd party site (Groupon) to try to find a deal
4. Use another 3rd party travel site (Luxury Link) to try to find a deal

Four Seasons does not seem to offer many discounts (I realize this is part of the panache of the place) but trying to make this work in our favor as much as possible. As a last resort, I can always use a 0% APR card and/or do a Balance transfer.

So my main question is - have I overlooked any other options?

Our family has cashed in miles (thanks FW on a Southwest credit card offer) for tickets to Washington DC next month (October). Checking TripAdvisor I quickly realized hotels are exceedingly expensive, so I have been looking into AirBnB. One of my questions, though, is what areas are considered safe? Most everybody that lists on the site says they are in a good neighborhood, but DC as a whole isn't the greatest. Since parking seems like a bear, we won't have a rental car and just use the Metro. But since we will have a grandmother and child, I would at least like to know we can walk the streets a little ways without too much worry. Or should I use cabs or a service like Uber if we are coming back after dark?

Also, since we will be there for about a week and a half, so I'm hoping we can cram in as many sites as possible. Which ones would you consider the must do?

Thank you for any advice.

<![CDATA[NY Times: 7 Steps To Cheap Hotels]]> http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/travel-discussion/1387224/ Rating: 8 Posted By: LArugby
Views: 3713 Replies: 18

The NY Times has an excellent travel section (certainly better than the nonsense we deal with at the LA Times). One of my favorite travel writers is Seth Kugel (probably because I wish I had his life of writing for the NY Times, covering events such as the "Pastry Festival" in Nice or the latest Hefewiezen tastings in Munich). He's known as the "Frugal Traveler" and often has some good tips on where to stay, book, and when to go.

One of his latest is "7 Steps To Cheaper Hotel Rooms". Its something that can help readers on FatWallet. Here is the article:http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/10/travel/7-steps-to-a-cheaper-ho...

When reading I thought, "I could do better with some of my own tips" particularly when he mentioned Kayak.com as the site to use to check rates. For me, that is not a tip for 2014. It's more 2008. Why? Every time I search on Kayak it almost always pulls up the rates on Priceline or Expedia. This search "100 sites stuff" that Kayak touts in the slogans is highly questionable. They seem to search about 3 or 4 sites.

It seems plenty of readers felt that way too. So the "Frugal Traveler" gave us a follow up based on reader comments that is worth checking out.

His follow up was "Readers Respond To Hotel Tips":http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/19/travel/readers-respond-to-hote...

In this one he takes it on the chin with some comments that some readers found questionable. However, what I saw as the best comment in both articles was the mentioning of BestTravelCoupon.com and how it measured up with Kayak. Kugel did a rate comparison test and wrote that it did "Search more sites than Kayak" (How could it not?) and that it beats "Kayak's best". I thought the "Frugal Traveler" came up with a good tip here. It's a site I use and it does beat up Kayak whenever I compare the sites.

Check out both links to the NY Times above. You'll find some good info in there on saving on travel including the stuff on BestTravelCoupon and a mention of Yapta which is a newer travel service for flights which I was not aware of.

Hope you find this useful.

A friend of mine is coming in to town this weekend. He was sticker-shocked when he saw the price of accommodations. Apparently this weekend, most hotels seem booked solid. He really doesn't want to go lower than a 3 star hotel (or 2.5 on Priceline.)

I've done the Priceline thing for him but not finding any great deals. The Express Deals are coming in at 120- 130 for a 2 star, at best.

Anyone have any ideas for websites or strategies to try?

I'm not the best at travel planning because I don't do much traveling myself. He is willing to stay within 80 miles or so around town, but just doesn't want to stay where the quality would be more appropriately rated in bedbugs instead of starts.

I am planning a charter bus trip to NYC on Sunday, December 14th. I am searching for a dropoff 7AM and pickup 9PM location for the bus. On The Gardens website I found that bus drop off location "Bus and limousine drop-off are located on 7th avenue between W. 31st and W. 33rd Streets as well as W. 31st and W. 33rd Streets between 7th and 8th Avenues." I used the parking regulations database and found that at 7 AVENUE @ WEST 32 STREET the regulation is as follows "NO STANDING EXCEPT COMMERCIAL VEHICLES METERED PARKING 3 HR LIMIT 7AM-7PM EXCEPT SUNDAY <----->". It says, except Sunday so does this mean that dropoff and pickup is allowed any time on Sundays?

Will be in LAS in September. For 4.5 day rental - Budget offered a Chevy Tahoe with pickup at the Tropicana location return to McCarran Rental Facility for $36.27 total (taxes/fees included). Budget online chat confirmed that the rental price was valid. The lowest car rental I have found is $165 total (taxes/fees included) for economy car. (Not interested in Firefly, Sixt, EZ or Payless) With the cost of taxi/shuttle to get there and the cost to replenish fuel, is it worth it? Too much vehicle for 2 people? Staying on the strip. Thoughts?

<![CDATA[Advice Needed - Cheated during Travel Booking through MakeMyTrip (MMYT)]]> http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/travel-discussion/1383069/ Rating: 0 Posted By: jkotharibot
Views: 3273 Replies: 9

All fellow FW'ers.
I need advice on my recent experience and how to proceed or what do you think. Please be kind - Here is what happened:

1. I call them to book an urgent ticket - My dad passed away. (Prior to calling them - i called delta directly and got a price, but since I might need internal tickets to the country of travel (india), i thought of using them).
2. Agent starts with a price range(~$1600 range), while trying to book me a confirmed seat after 1 hrs of hold and wait - he comes with $3000 price tkt. I ask for bereavement fare / or something such that there is no change fee (delta was giving me this option).
3. I ask him to cancel it and suggest i am getting confirmed on delta for ~1800 range. He puts me on hold - after sometime - tells me - he is on phone with delta agent and all seats are full and not available. Gives me BS about - i should not worry abt money and get confirmed seats and i should make decision now - as the current airline is on hold and will confirm asap.
4. I confirm and pay them (he has price little north of $6k for 2 adults tkts+infant) - but then throws me a discount and charges me $6k round number.
5. Flight was for later in the night. (i called at 4 in morning PST).
6. During the day, my baby is not feeling well. I call to change the tkt by 1 day. Agents are not responding or putting me on long wait. After a long time, when i do get them and after long discussion, they say "i will be charged $2500 as cancellation fee" and after buying the new tkts - i still owe them $500 more.
7. I am given reason that airline is charging them cancellation fee. I ask if I can talk to airline and leave a note in system.
8. I call airline and explain the situation for change. They say " you tkts are flexi-fare (singapore airline) you can change as many time as you want - we dont charge". I ask agent to put note in system about this. I also find out - agent used some promo code- such that return tkt was free and they only paid for oneway, while booking. (I believe that to be the reason for such steep cancellation fee). I ask singapore agent - if they can credit money to me directly. They could not as it was booked by agent. I asked if they can credit the agent everything they way it was booked. They said yes - if agent calls.
9. I call MMYT again. Trying to talk to manager and explained the scenario. - She says best we can do is - $2500 change fee and whatever extra for the new ticket. I tell about my discussion with singapore air - she was like - doesnt matter - its within 24 hrs and we will charge you. (I was told its for inconvenience to them - "really??"). I remind her, that i had asked for bereavement fare booking - i should not be charged. No change in offer or attitude. I asked, if I could get credit for the amount - I will book myself for the new flight, since airline is not charging them and is willing to credit them the way they booked. I was told - NO.
10. So I end up booking next day flight and paying extra $500. I was not provided new invoice with details about change fee (cancellation fee or whatever they dubbed it as) - or new tkt price. Just one line Total fare is $6000 (previously paid)+$500.
11. In the meantime I had called delta 3-4 times - and was still able to get a confirmed seats with them for ~$1800 (increased during last call at 9pm) and agent said - we have lots of open seats - probably plane will fly not full. (I felt I was cheated during the first call where agent said he is on phone with delta and they dont have seats) and since they didnt want to credit back the money (when airline was ready to).
11. They book us in 2 different PNR's, as a result - we dont get seats together the whole trip (back and forth), no bassinet or meals (as requested).
12. On my way back - I logged into the airline (for mileage purpose) - and saw the invoice price for our tkts (which is now removed - once I escalated the issue for charging me change fee - not anywhere in there website). They had booked tkts for $704 per adult.
13. I sent numerous email all the time asking for invoice and price and in writting about $2500 change fee. What i was told - I didnt get in writting.
14. When I return back to US. I file dispute with Amex, on above grounds. During my followup - amex said - they agreed to credit and we are waiting to receive once we receive we will close the case. But when the resolution came - I was denied stating "merchant sent proof of my booking and travel". Here merchant shows $500 as cancellation fee.
15. I called and explain Amex again - my dispute is not tkt - its being lied about seat/price availability, poor service, charging me change fee (which is not listed as this big amount) and not giving me invoice, and overcharging (i provided amex proof of $704 paid for tkt). Agent opens case again.
16. Very next hrs - I receive email - amex made a decision - again closed and sided with merchant. I call and get this "Merchant responded saying - they will re-bill if amex favors client", so amex agreed to there side.
17. After convincing the amex agent again - I tell her that I am not happy with resolution. we agree to open the case again - but for partial amount. Basically change fee what i was told and actually charged. and fare diff (to delta at available time).

What I want to understand is: if the last dispute again comes in merchant favor, what are my options. Am I unreasonable to ask for fair pricing and not be charged such hugh change fee (which they are giving in writing as lower amount)? I had asked amex to ask them for call records to know, they lied on phone. What are my options.
They used the emotional status I was in to their benefit at max. I dont want them to walk away with this.

Thanks for all your responses in advance. Please stick to the topic, i really need advice.

On Dec 3rd, 2013 I booked a 2 bedroom condo at Wyndham Waikiki Beach Walk via VBRO - Paradise Beach Club Vacations. I paid $1895 for rental from 8/12-8/19 2014.
On 7/27 I received an email fromPBCV with topic "Regarding prior notices - 3rd and final email" with the below content:
On Sun, Jul 27, 2014 at 7:57 AM, vrbo 332900<vrbo332900@gmail.com>wrote:
Dear Guest, This is our final notice to you regarding your reservation. We have sent you 2 attempts to contact you regarding your reservation. We are advising all our guests that due to circumstances beyond our control that have just recently arisen. We are not able to provide to you the accommodations that you have reserved in Hawaii. We sincerely apologize, however we can provide you California, Florida and or Mexico. We realize that this could be a inconvenience to you. For some of you this may be coming at a late date. . We will be sending within the next 30 days a refund voucher that you will be able to use with available dates for these locations for your future travel.Obviously if Hawaii is your only destination then you do have the choice of cancelling this reservation through your credit card company. (please contact them directly if this is your choice )Please contact us by email if you would like to rebook for one of the above listed locations.Again our sincere apologiesThank youCustomer Service Department

I have been calling and emailing demanding a full refund but PBCV insist on issuing me a voucher which expire in 1 year.
What can I do to get full refund? I had a contract signed with PBCV to book the 2 bedrooms.

Below are the corresponding emails:
Dear Jon
As the email states there was a issue, but we have sent everyone notices. Please let me know
as to a location that we can plan a future date for. Again we can rebook you for one of the locations listed in the prior emails
Customer service

Dear Jon, I understand you just called I tried to pick up the line but lost you. From what I understood you have not received or understand instructions regarding your reservation. As it states in the prior email as well as notices sent. That if Hawaii is your only destination and you are choosing not to accept the refund voucher for accommodations. We would like to accommodate you in one of our places that were offered. We do not understand as why you are responding at such a late dates as this was the 3rd notice for refund. As it stated in the original reservation on of the terms that was stated is to buy trip insurance, if you did please contact your instance company. Or please alert me to a destination as per the email that was sent to you for a future location and date.
Please respond by email.
Thank you Jeff

Had I received any of the prior notices, I would've acted right away
like right now with this serious matter. How can anyone overlook at
such issue when my vacation had been ruined before it even started?
I really need the money credit back to me, because I can't make
payment on my credit card with this new balance. I had to frantically
booked for 2 rooms at an outrageous price with such short notice and
peek season. That's why we planned ahead and booked ahead back in Dec
Also, my family does not take a vacation every year, we can only
afford every other year to travel far.
Please understand my situation, your company had held on to my payment
for the last 8 months and had not delivered based on the contract.

I will be visiting China for 1 week in late September. Having just started doing my research and planning, I am looking for tips and advice, mainly on strategies for maximizing my travel dollars. Here are some things I've learned so far:

- Accommodation seems to be on par with North America. I'm looking at $50 per night for budget hotel on up to $200+ per night for higher end hotels.
- I will probably visit Datong and Pingyao, taking the overnight train. This has the benefits of: accommodation + transport in 1, and saving time on travel.
- I will try to avoid eating western food in tourist destinations
- I want to do a lot of shopping and will barter pretty hard. I've heard that I should pay between 40% and 60% of the original asking price.
- Transportation is a big question mark for me. I have heard that the subway is cheap and convenient. However, a good friend was able to hire a tour guide and driver for a total of just $50 per day. This seems insanely cheap and the benefit of a 'professional' tour with all the commentary and convenience.

Any other tips related to Beijing, Datong, and Pingyao very much appreciated.
