<![CDATA[Looking for tips on saving money on trip to Beijing, China]]> http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/travel-discussion/1380034/ Rating: 0 Posted By: FamilyOfSix
Views: 537 Replies: 0

I will be visiting China for 1 week in late September. Having just started doing my research and planning, I am looking for tips and advice, mainly on strategies for maximizing my travel dollars. Here are some things I've learned so far:

- Accommodation seems to be on par with North America. I'm looking at $50 per night for budget hotel on up to $200+ per night for higher end hotels.
- I will probably visit Datong and Pingyao, taking the overnight train. This has the benefits of: accommodation + transport in 1, and saving time on travel.
- I will try to avoid eating western food in tourist destinations
- I want to do a lot of shopping and will barter pretty hard. I've heard that I should pay between 40% and 60% of the original asking price.
- Transportation is a big question mark for me. I have heard that the subway is cheap and convenient. However, a good friend was able to hire a tour guide and driver for a total of just $50 per day. This seems insanely cheap and the benefit of a 'professional' tour with all the commentary and convenience.

Any other tips related to Beijing, Datong, and Pingyao very much appreciated.

Ideally,I would like to become a travel agent under someone's else umbrella and get a commission split.

Have a couple questions:
1.What is the normal commission split percentage wise ?
2.Any links, ideas on companies that are interested in such arrangment ? At present, the volume is 650-800K in sales.

Thank you,

First, I will travel myself, no friend, no pet, no parent, which hotel is safe?
Second, I will go to rent a car, which company is cheap?
Third, I don't have much money, I want to travel for 15 days, the fee is not over $1500.

I like Newzealand, but I don't know whether the fee is enough, or somebody can give me some suggestion.

The three- and four-star hotels taking part in the scheme are located in the city's 9th and 11th districts -- a little away from the city's tourist centres. The owners are bullish about the prospects and confident that clients will not abuse the scheme.Tourists often complain about high hotel rates in Paris and tiny rooms. France attracts more tourists than any other country in the world. The scheme will run until August 10 and will be available only to those who have made bookings through the websitewww.payezcequevousvoulez.net(Pay what you want)."It's a fair price operation, one of confidence in the client," said Aldric Duval, the head of the Tour d'Auvergne hotel, and the man who came up with the idea.Guests will pay whatever they want, based on their impressions of the hotel, the room and the service. The experiment could be extended if it works and clients don't abuse it.

is it possible to trade these points off to another rewards in my name then back to southwest ?

Other options imconsidering:

1) 75K & 53K (wife) Marriot --> Southwest ... seems 75K = 25K southwest and 50K = 15K southwest ... netting the 40K needed.... if there are no issues with wife's migration to my RR account
2) 82K IHG rewards--> Southwest.... I see it says you can transfer to their airline affiliates but doesn't say which and you have to call

I'm trying to plan a Vegas trip for my birthday next month. I've stayed at the Flamingo many times and I dig the location & pool. Most of my friends are on a budget and I don't know how many will be coming but I booked two rooms for now through Total Rewards. I put only two people to keep the price down but I noticed the Go rooms with two queens also have a chaise couch so theoretically maybe five people could sleep in one room. They also appear to have some kind of stereo.

Anyway I noticed something was up when the booking site listed the Go Deluxe Two Queens High Roller View CHEAPER than the regular Go Deluxe Two Queens. Clicking through to more pictures/info brought up a Fab Deluxe Two Queens High Roller View - so, probably a website glitch, but not one that everyone might catch. I went ahead and booked the rooms and my immediate confirmation (which I printed) said GO. However sure enough my e-mail confirmation said Fab. I called Total Rewards and the rep confirmed this; I explained the situation and she "made a note", but will that hold up at the front desk? Should I call the Flamingo front desk now or just risk showing up and seeing what happens? I have a screen shot of the Total Rewards site and my printed confirmation. I guess I don't want to have 5 people and someone has to sleep on the floor... (And yes, I understand we can't all walk up to check-in if I put 2 people.)

Want to explore a lot of parks and some coast. What's recommended?

Concerned a bit about the food, kinda use to stuff like grilled chicken sandwiches, pizza and coke. Will that be found there as it is here? Is McD's similar? I know it's a great chance to try new things but gastronomical distress is a concern.

Also considering staying at some youth hostels instead of hotels, looking at it as just a place to crash for a night. Worthwhile?

TSA Fee Hike Set to Raise Prices on All U.S. Flights

A TSA fee hike goes into effect at the end of this month. In a few weeks, the September 11 Security Fee will rise from $2.50 for one-way flights (with a cap at $10 roundtrip) and $5 each way for trips with connections, to $5.60 per one-way flight. The cap will be no more.

Under the new rule, fees for direct round-trip flights will jump from $5 to $11.20.

The way the TSA applies the fees to airfares will get slightly more complex, too. The TSA will $5.60 charge for each flight leg that occurs more than four-hours following a previous leg, for domestic flights. Internationally and for flights to Hawaii and Alaska, the same rule applies for legs that are 12 hours apart. This means that flights with long layovers, which would have previously counted as a single one-way trip, will get taxed doubly. So a round-trip flight with two four-hour connections would cost an additional $22.40 in security fees.

I'm looking for a map of the "Complimentary Resort Transportation" at Disney World Orlando. We are looking at staying on-site at Disney and will not have a car.

Specifically I'm wondering if it gets as close to Giordano's Pizzaat 12151 S. APOPKA VINELAND RD LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL 32836- Or within walking distance?

OR theGiordano's at, 7866 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy, Kissimmee, FL 34747????

We would prefer to eat in vs. delivery.

Also I have heard that there are stores (Target, etc) within walking distance and wonder where they are located.

I'd sure like to find a map so show me where these things are as they relate to the complimentary resort transportation.

I've found the following, but none have hit the Target -

Of course I can Google the address (and did) but I can't tell if it's anywhere near the resort transportation route.

Thank you!

<![CDATA[Disney Orlando - With or without meal option? Which is better?]]> http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/travel-discussion/1373004/ Rating: 1 Posted By: jimmywalt
Views: 4954 Replies: 28

We are thinking about taking a 5 night trip to Disney in Orlando this October. It's me, my wife and our 4 year old.

We plan to purchase the 4 day park tickets so that we can visit the Magical Kingdom and the Animal Kingdom. We aren't interested in the other parks. We are hoping that we can get though the MK and AK in two days without rushing. Also we don't do rides - don't like them and don't want to wait in the lines.

When purchasing on Disney's website to stay at the on-site resort (planning on Disney All-Star Movie resort), it also give the option of purchasing meals but not sure that's the most economical way to do this. After all, what is the price of one soft drink, hamburger and fries? $10 bucks,$20 bucks, $30 bucks????

We don't eat a lot (especially the 4 year old). We plan to ship breakfast items and various snacks to the hotel from home so that they are there when we arrive (my wife can ship for free so that doesn't cost us anything). So we will need lunch and dinner - probably from the "counter" type places. If we do any sit-down restaurants will probably be onlyonce.

We would arrive on a Saturday and leave on a Thursday. Price for room & 4 day park passes $1,588. Add "quick service meal" additional $500, add "regular dining" additional $702. Do these additions count from arrival to depart or just on the days with the park passes?

So with this information is it worth it to purchase a meal plan or not?

I'm planning to go to Cuba some time this year. For some political reason, if you exchange USD straight to CUC (Cuban Convertibles), you only get 87 of a dollar. But not with other currencies like Canadian dollar or Euro or Sterling. So, is there a good place in US where I can get those currencies with minimal or no fee?

I read other forum post likehttp://www.fatwallet.com/forums/travel-discussion/1370041/ and Google search and couldn't find any info.

I have a several prepaid Visa gift cards I have received as gifts and I would like to use them to buy a ticket on United Airlines, but they only allow two forms of payment.

I can use two credit cards or one credit card and a United Airlines Gift Card (sold by United.com only). Of course the gift cards can only be bought with one credit card.

The flight is $1500 so I will need to use 6-8 cards. I have contacted Orbitz and they said they could not do it. Do you know of any places that would allow me to split my payments with more than two cards?

I've been looking for a NYC to LAX round trip ticket in middle of August (roughly August 10-24 but +/- 3 days). I am only seeing prices around $500-600. Can I find cheaper prices later? I was hoping to spend around $300-350 round trip like last time.

My wife and I have a rare opportunity that we are off work and no kids this coming weekend and would like to get out of town with no particular destination in mind. There are a number of last minute travel sites but I have been unable to find one with a search that does not require a destination when searching for travel. It would be great to be able to enter departure city and dates and get some options. Any ideas?

Hotel recommendations for Hartford, CT for Sat, Sep 13, 2014.

Planning to stick the kids, with a brought along baby sitter AKA older sister, @ recommended hotel whilst me n momma take in the Luke Bryan show at the Xfinity Theatre. So ... looking for a hotel with an indoor pool, Kids encouraged or at least well tolerated, clean (cant stand paying for dirty hotels), continental breakfast included with room (always good), cheap parking (im from the backwoods ... so paying for parking is a foreign idea to me .. we gotta drive 30 mins from home before we even see a parking meter) free wifi in the room.

This may not be FW approved but id DEF pay $10 more for the hotel to be close to the concert venue. If this goes over as well as i hope ... momma bear n me would spend the extra time not in traffic but ... walking holding hands or doing other PG romantic stuff couples do when the room(S) are occupied by the kiddos.

We are about 3 hours away and will be driving in that day and driving home that Sunday afternoon. Depending on whats available we might/prolly should get a second room.

So that about sums it up. If i get some good info here i will post pics ... especially of her ... Thanks in advance FW.
Now ... Thats my kind of night !!

<![CDATA[Using Enterprise discount codes FYI]]> http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/travel-discussion/1371026/ Rating: 4 Posted By: JiggleTheHandle

General FYI... I never saw this before, and I have been using Enterprise for years...

Started the booking process with no corporate account ID and no coupon, and it gave me $290 for a weekly rental.

Put in some corporatediscount codes, and the price increased by varying amounts to as much as $329 for the same car and time. Some codes decreased the $290 by a few dollars.

Anyway, this is the first time I have ever seen using a code INCREASE the cost from a base no-discount-code price.

I would suggest starting your booking in one browser with no codes, see what the base prices is and keep it active (Enterprise.com has a timeout limit), while using a different browser totest out codes.

We're planning a September trip to Yosemite/Sequoia-Kings Canyon. Outbound flight options include a Tuesday 10am-12pm stop to change planes in DEN. Is this enough time to Uber to visit the nearest "herb" store 20 miles away and return in time to catch our flight?

I will be traveling to these countries next money in this order > Netherlands (Euro) > Germany (Euro) > Czech Republic (CZK) > Hungary (HUF) > Austria (Euro).
I have BOA, CHASE, and PNC checking accounts as well as a Credit Card with no foreign transaction fees (Chase Sapphire).

I heard ATM is the best way to do currency exchange especially with a partner bank. For example Deutsche Bank is partners with BOA so i don't have to pay a Nonbank ATM fee. Problem with this is I start at Netherlands first so I wont be able to avoid that ATM Fee initially. Should I just with drawl all the the euro's i think ill need in Netherlands?

Hotels already booked. I'd guesstimate I need 400 Euros, 5000CZK, and 45000 HUF spending cash for 2.5 weeks (sightseeing/nightlife). I will be using my credit card when possible. What do you all recommend me doing?

We are looking to book a vacation package to Los Cabos for about 15 people from San Francisco. The all inclusive packages are cheaper than flights and hotels booked separately.

Any one knows any site or discounts that we can apply. Right now it is about 900 per person.
Here is our approach:
1. See SW vacations, AA Vacations, Expedia, Travelocity, vacations etc? Any discount codes or anyways to get a discount?
2. Credit card vacations (Amex travel? Any others? Any way to get deals discounts?)
3. Any agents?

Any one with experience?
