Pyrex is a brand name for glassware, introduced by Corning Incorporated in 1915. Originally, Pyrex was made from thermal shock resistant borosilicate glass. Since 1998, when Corning spun off its kitchenware division as World Kitchen, Pyrex branded kitchen glassware has been made of soda-lime glass.

How to safely use Pyrex glass is at http://www.pyrexware.com/thetruthaboutpyrex/index.htm

fyi, many other pyrex sets and individual pieces are available this way, with both the 4-for-3 promotion and the World Market $10 off $50 purchase promotion.

just make sure the pyrex you look at is from world market.

last week i ordered some mix and match pyrex sets and used both promotions -- got great deals on sets which at Kohls.com are about 3 times more expensive.

add in the free Amazon shipping and it just can't be beat - especially given that many popular plastic storage sets (like the rubbermaid premier type which i had pushed the boat out on to buy lots of last fall) have the problem chemical in the plastic that leaches out into food (bpa i think it is). i've switched exclusively to glass storage now.

I'm not seeing the 4-for-3 discount, just the $10 off...anyone else having this problem?

Tempting but I don't think I can fit anymore Pyrex/Tupperware/Dishes in my cupboards! Ughhh...

FYI: Costco generally carries a very large, mixed set of Pyrex dishes for only about $30.

i'm having trouble picking the combination of four items. I don't want to get ones that could be considered essentially "repeats"

Can you guys tell me which combos you chose?

Thanks OP. Need to watch what you add to cart. Some of the items are not free shipping eligible. But you can find them sold from Amazon for a lil more.

This is not your grandmother's Pyrex.

The Pyrex manufactured and sold today has a tendency to shatter when used as cookware. I have personally had two Pyrex brand dishes shatter while cooking (one in a microwave, the other in the oven). There have been numerous complaints about this:

http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2006/03/pyrex_panic.html

The Pyrex you fondly remember as being indestructible was manufactured by Corning and was made from thermal shock resistant borosilicate glass. The Pyrex brand kitchen glassware you can buy today is made from soda-lime glass and is not manufactured by Corning. The Pyrex you buy today is just plain old glass, the same stuff soda bottles are made from. Corning sold it's consumer brand Pyrex name 1998 and it is now manufactured by a company called World Kitchen, LLC.

webersd-
I see your point. But fortunately, I do not store my food in a microwave or an oven, so these storage sets will work great for me.

I find it hard to believe that there is the widespread problem reported at a few consumer-type sites when there is nothing at all at the Consumer Products Safety Commission web site. I would expect that routinely exploding oven glassware would get their attention.

And no, I'm not questioning webersd's personal account, just whether it is a widespread inherent problem with the product. We use the stuff regularly with no problems so far. Of course, that doesn't mean it's perfectly safe either.

I bought the round set and the rectangular set on a deal a couple years ago.

Overall well worth the money.

Eventually the plastic tops get brittle and crack.

I also had the large rectangular container shatter in the oven when a little water was added to the hot pan. I guess be careful in the oven and during cooling.

Funny you should all be discussing it shattering- I bought this very set from Amazon about 6 months ago. The largest bowl shattered yesterday as I put it away from the dishwasher. It was fully cooled, but the moment it touched the shelf it shattered all over my kitchen. My right hand is covered with cuts and a piece cut my forehead.

Be very careful.
