New Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 for $87/89 w/free shipping. Lowest price I have seen recently for a NEW unit from a reseller I trust.

Called the "nifty fifty". Made of plastic, but many photographers rave about the quality of the photos it produces. Perfect for Portraits and similar work.

Amazon: 88.57 w/free shipping
Adorama: $87 w/free shipping orderd through Amazon

Link

Should come up as order direct from Amazon. If you want to buy it from Adorama, use the link on the right side of the screen.

Some other vendors show the lens for less, but once you add shipping cost, its more than above.

you can get this in your gold box with some tricks and patience for aroun 85 and it has been less recently and this is just about normal price.

Warm deal on a very good prime lens.

That's right, this is the normal price for this lens. Agree on this being a warm deal.

I'll suggest J&R which has this for $85 at Link and you will also get 12% via Live at Live Cashback.
Shipping is $7 to CA but no tax, so total is approx. $82.

Doesn't New Yorkers pay tax on everything in state and out of state now?

I am not familiar with anything regarding New Yorkers paying sales tax on everything. I also am not a tax specialist, but here is my understanding of state tax liability. Typically, you are supposed to pay tax to your own jurisdiction on out of state purchases. There is usually a place for it on your state tax forms. But nobody pays it, and no state tries to enforce it. If the seller has a presence in that state, they are obliged to collect taxes for goods shipped to that state. J and R has a flagship location in NYC, and a bunch of other B&M stores in Manhattan. That is J and R collects sales tax from New Yorkers.

All that being said, J and R is a good vendor.

If I'm not mistaken there's a J&R within a block of the WTC site.

Not yet. Just in state, Newegg and Amazon.

Sorry to veer this topic, but the 50mm I just bought seems to "hunt" focus a long time in general and often not find it at all when AF is set to center. It also occasionally misses focus in the wider apertures. I am confident I am focusing properly. Is this something anomalous to the lens I received (then I should have it checked) or has anyone with the lens experienced this as well (and I should work around it)?

Adorama website has it for $84.95

This is typical for the 50 1.8. It will servo back and forth a few times in low light or indoors hunting for focus. Also at wider aperatures (F2 F1.8) the depth of field is razor thin. You can have the subject eyes in focus and their nose blurry. The camera/lens is taking it's best guess on what you want in focus. When the lens does manage to focus correctly you can capture some wonderful images. Just don't expect to use this on a moving object (like your kids) and get a sharp low light image.
