I am still a student at the moment. Last year I borrowed 30k from credit card companies and lost them all in the stock market. Trading stocks is the dumbest decision I have ever made and there is no way back. I will graduate this summer with a MA degree and probablly start working around August, but I have nothing to pay for my credit card balance now.
What are my options?
Here is the break-down of my debts:
American Express 11K+1k 2 credit cards 300minimum/month
Citi 8K 250 minimum/month
Bank of America 11K 350 minimun/month
Discover 6k 200/month
Car loan from Honda 4.5k 257/month

300+250+350+200+257+450(rent)+food= about 2k per month.
I can probablly get a job that pays 1k/month starting Feburary.
and I dont have anything to pay for December/January bills.

Options:
- Bankruptcy
- Start working a part-time job
- Negotiate with creditors to lower payments

Better get a part time job real quick because those minimum payments are going to be between 600-900/month or even more.

The lesson you just learned is more valuable than all 4 years of your collegiate education. Welcome to the school of hard knocks.

I just cann't make enough money to pay for rent, food, car loan and credit cards all at the same time and have used up all the savings I got. Should I ring up credit card companies and tell them that I should be able to make payments in August?

You can try, but they won't care.

Have you looked into getting a student loan to pay off the credit cards?

You may have to resort to selling blood.

What about collecting aluminum cans?

I am quite serious about this. Someone from a credit card company that I owe money to called me and asked why I havent payed last month's bill. I said I forgot
I really do not want to file for bankruptcy since I am getting payed 70k per year starting August.
What if I just dont pay until August? What will be the worst scenario If I just ignore the bills?

I would sue the college that gave you an MA for a multi-million dollar settlement. Clearly they defrauded you.

I would then live off the interest.

I know they can not be responsible for whole common sense, but they left you so ill-prepared to face the world that they have exhibited gross negligence.

You need to pay something, anything, even if it's just the minimum payments. Don't just ignore the bills. At least call them up and see what your options are.

late fees, it'll pretty much lower your credit for. now. what are your current minimum payments?

Off topic, were you just too aggressive with your trading strategy?

What most of the people are saying is: You must either pay the credit card companies (by borrowing money, taking an extra job, etc) or not pay the credit card companies and suffer the consequences - astronomical fees, interest, a ruined credit score, inability to buy a house, car, or get a home phone in the future.

You borrowed the money. it wasn't monopoly money, it was real money. So now you have to pay it back. The most honorable thing to do would be to quit school and start working to pay it off, but I'm not going to recommend that: everybody will get their money faster if you get that MA. So let's talk about paying the minimums.

you're getting an MA, it follows that you have a 4-yr degree in something. what degree is it? Can you turn it into a part time or late night job? can you reduce your expenses? sell a car, sleep on someone's couch, eat baloney sandwiches for lunch?

Hey but OP is get a MA, so all they had to do was to teach OP how to draw.

your best option is to take your student loan while you are still elligible, take the plus loan if you have to, and pay off as much as you can and leave enough to pay min payment until August. At least student loans are capped on interested rate and is most definitely lower than what you'll face with your credit card.

Quite a shame that OP is a senior member and has been around since 2002. I guess you haven't learned a thing.
