What to buy in December? …or When!
Online shoppers spend more money in December than any other month. FatWallet’s Holiday Spending survey confirms as consumers say they plan to spend more money during December sales than on Black Friday or Cyber Monday deals this year. They’ll spend the majority of money on gifts and food, and overall, 78% will spend the same or more than last year. (See INFOGRAPHIC for more results.) Smart shoppers will look to stack discounts to make this big spend pay off, especially during FatWallet’s holiday cash back sale with hundreds of top stores increasing cash back throughout December.
The full assault of sales events in December can be quite overwhelming. December shoppers can save time and make smarter purchases by utilizing resources that aggregate all of these sales, deals, coupons and store offers to let shoppers compare on-the-fly, or, on-the-go with a mobile app like FatWallet’s new DEAL HUNTER. The app pulls in comments and additional savings tips from the community in the Hot Deals forum and from informed staff. These kind of tips help December shoppers know when to stack discounts, which is the key to saving money this month.
Cyber Monday Deals: Like Black Friday creep into Thanksgiving Day, Cyber Sunday becomes a real event and lasts into the following “Cyber Week”. Similar doorbuster pricing will feature excellent savings on new tablets, smartphones and other in-demand items. Carry overs from Black Friday will bring one-off deals on laptops, TVs and electronics, but most deals are limited to specific models, so make sure to compare before buying. The real bang for your buck will come from store-wide discounts, especially on clothing from clothing brand e-tailers like Levi’s, AERO, American Eagle, Lands End and many others. Expect 40-60% of clothing, shoes and accessories, and bigbox will bring 20-40% off the majority of items and free shipping with threshhold purchases. Fatwallet’s Cyber Monday Cash Back sale makes the majority of these deals better as hundreds of top retailers increase cash back from Saturday through Monday or the entire week.
Green Monday Deals: A second round of store-wide discounts surface, this time with a focus on items for the home and kitchen, like cookware, bakeware, dinnerware, cutlery and glassware from Amazon, Walmart, Kohl’s, Sears, Macy’s and others. Although the enormity of clothing discounts won’t match what we saw on Cyber Monday, look for one-day store exclusives and B1G1 specials, sometimes named Cyber Monday 2. This may be your last chance to get the hot selling models and styles, if they aren’t out of stock already.
Free Shipping Day (or week): Isn’t every day free shipping day? In fact, there are dozens of stores that offer free shipping or flat rates year round (see full list). With that said, the reason to pay attention to this event, which falls on December 18 this year, is that almost every retailer will participate with either free shipping, or a form of it (free shipping with a qualified purchase amount). This is your chance to assure you’ll get gifts in time for Christmas, without having to pay for shipping, let alone rush delivery charges. Shoppers should be alert for retailer restrictions, as although stores don’t want to be left out of the big Free Shipping Day lists, the majority will have restrictions on which items are eligible.
Gift Cards: Believe it or not, late December and right before Christmas break is the best time to buy gift cards. Not only will dozens of stores offer discounts (e.g. $100 GC for $80), especially for restaurants, movies and local entertainment, but you can also get cash back on many of these deals. We would advise anyone looking for gift card discounts to read the fine print, especially when trying to apply cash back to the initial purchase, or during redemption.
December Clearance: Most of the really good deals during this event that starts promptly the day after Christmas (if not on Christmas day online) include huge 50-90% discounts on holiday decorations, wrapping paper/bows/tags, holiday dinnerware and food and holiday candy. But we also see some really spectacular prices on off-brand and out-of-season clothing, shoes, toys, small electronics and small appliances. This sale will stretch right through the end of the month and turn into New Years sales, but the early birds get the big haul. Tap into FatWallet’s Hot Deals forum or BFAds.net for insider deals and tips on the best clearance bargains as soon as you can, because the best picks of this litter do not last more than hours.
