What to Buy in FEBRUARY?
As Super Bowl sales wrap up, HDTV prices, especially older 1080p LED TV models should continue to offer deep savings and be a big part of President’s Day sales as retailers continue to clear older inventory for incoming newer models. Expect 20-30% savings on a big selection of 55” or larger smart TVs and many 4K UHD models under $1000.
The increased demand for 4K TVs and streaming media devices isn’t a big surprise, as FatWallet’s 2016 TV Buyers Survey reports that of the 1 in 4 that will be new TVs this year, nearly half (46%) will buy their first 4K TVs and nearly one third of Americans now stream the majority of their TV programming (more than two thirds of Millennials). Expect good bargains for Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Google Chromecast to continue throughout February.
As of this week, we’re in full swing for Valentine’s Day sales, making this one of the best times of year to find deep savings on Jewelry and watches, as well as lingerie, chocolate and 2 for 1 dinners and movie tickets. Be sure to check sites like Groupon and Living Social for savings up to 50% or more at restaurants and local spas offering special Valentine’s deals. Fat wallet members will tip the savings scale on these items with increased cash back from dozens of retailers participating in their annual Valentine’s Deals promotion.

As V-Day procrastinators scurry to buy last-minute gifts, Presidents Day sales creeps in a week early to overlap retail offers on a variety of savings for big ticket items for the home. Similar to Memorial Day and Labor Day sales, expect 20-40% off furniture, major appliances, mattresses, housewares and tools, (NOTE: many big box retailers will offer 6 mo. 0% financing, allowing you to take advantage of the sale, get the items now, and pay off with incoming tax refunds before the interest kicks in). For really large items, ask for free delivery to sweeten the purchase, and take advantage of cash back, which really adds up to significant money saved when you purchase expensive items. FatWallet Presidents Day Deals start Feb. 10.
The end of February is the optimum time to shop for winter clearance. Although we experienced many more one-off sales this year in January (thanks to a warm weather holiday), the majority of stores that carry winter apparel start deep discounting winter apparel during Presidents day events and following through the end of the month, and into March to make room for Spring Fashion (Note: selection starts really thins out in March, but prices can be up to 80% off if you dare to wait). Expect to find great deals on coats, boots, hats, gloves and cold wear garments in late February. Depending on the weather, it can also be a good time to look for clearance on outdoor sports and tools and automotive products, early spring-like weather can result in better discounting on what’s remaining in stock at big box retailers like REI, Moosejaw, Cabela’s and Bass Pro Shop, to name a few.
Finally, February offer the best time to secure those Spring Beak travel booking, including taking advantage of great luggage deals throughout the month. Hotel deals and travel packages are still available at cut rate pricing. Booking now assures better rooms, seats, travel times and increased cash back from more than 100 online travel merchants on FatWallet during Presidents Day sales and later in the month.
