FatWallet would like to send a shout out to retailer Newegg, for fighting for all the good guys out there. Recently Newegg was the target of a patent infringement case, in which Soverain Software attempted to sue for $2.5 million in damages, for violations of three of the company’s patents.
While many people may not realize it, patent litigation has been the “go to” method of shaking business down for easy money. There are actually business out there, called “Patent Trolls” that revolve around an entire business model that scoops up very broad reaching patents, and then fires off thousands of patent infringement lawsuit against companies, just to see what sticks. And for many companies, it is cheaper to just pay to use the patent, than it would be to fight the suit.
Instead of paying Soverain Software, Newegg on the other hand decided to stand up for themselves, and fight. While the legal fees for fighting the law suit were not disclosed, you can bet it was pretty costly to go to court for two years just to prove their innocence. But in the end they came out ahead, and their accomplishment will help other business in the e-commerce field fend off similar lawsuits. And for that Newegg deserves recognition.
With that in mind, FatWallet is having a giveaway to help support a company that fights for what it believes in, Go Newegg!
