The official start of fall is quickly approaching, and the new makeup lines feature all things vampy. Summer colors are out, and colors that remind us of pumpkin patches, hot chocolate, apple orchards and bonfires are in. With such fantastic colors, we welcome these trends like a cool breeze.
We invited members of the FatWallet to team test out some of this season’s hot makeup trends. We love the fact that so many lovely ladies volunteered their time to help us demonstrate what these trends look like on a variety of women of all ages.
Metallic eye shadow/glitter/liners:
Metallics such as bronze and gold complement a large array of skin tones. There are so many different ways to apply metallic tones. For the easiest application, go with classic shadow.
For a little more of a challenge, try a variety of metallic eyeliner to open up your eyes and enhance your lower lid and waterline.
The most difficult metallic cosmetic to control is glitter. Glitter is one of those hit or miss makeup tools; it can look like an elegant everyday look or a night out at the club. Glitter is notoriously difficult to apply, so proceed with caution. There is a bronze, silver or gold for everyone at every age. Want to experiment?
Rachel on left: “I feel pretty. I would wear this going out or on a date with my husband. I don’t normally wear makeup during the week.”
Gina on right: “Everyone sees themselves differently. The color is nice. It’s something I would try.”
Nyx: Prismatic eye shadow in bedroom eyes $6
Catrice: Liquid metal gel eye pencil $4.99
Urban Decay: Heavy metal loose glitter $12
Nyx glam shadow stick in 24 Karat $4.49
Nyx Ultra Pearl Mania loose pearl eye shadow in oro $2.99
*Note: NEVER apply craft glitter to your eyes. It has not met the same standards as cosmetic glitter the edges are sharper, crude and can severely damage your eye.
Dramatic eye with neutral lip:
A defused dark eye shadow with soft edges is a beautiful alternative to the classic smoky eye. It’s not just a nighttime look, though; a black or gray shadow mixed with a metallic could be bang-up office look.
The other dramatic eye look for fall is graphic liner. Show off your versatility with a double-winged liner, eye liner designs or thick-winged liner. If you’re looking to get into eyeliner or want to experiment, this is the season to go for it. If you mess up or it’s not perfect, no problem. There are a variety of experimental eyeliner looks that are great for newbies.
Gina on left: “It’s fun and different. I think I could wear this all of the time.”
Kelly on right: “I will wear smoky eye when I go out. This is darker than I usually wear [during the day], but its nice.”

Natural eye with dramatic lip:
The dark matte lip has been building in popularity, so it is exciting that the full-fledge vamp lip and classic red are on trend this fall. While red doesn’t sound new or revolutionary, it is back in fantastic ways. Given the popularity of the 90s trends, it was only a matter of time before the vampy goth look took over. While it may look like an evening look, there are so many shades that are great for the office. Since this look is easy to overdo, we recommend a neutral eye.
Louryn on left: “As a makeup junkie and a lover of trending beauty, I would totally wear this.”
Amanda on right: “I like it, but it’s hard to get used to because its drastic. It’s a confidence booster; I would wear this.”
