I keep wondering when mine will close.. I've never had an issue with in-store pickup but recently they always go over the 5-minute timeframe which means I get a $5 off $5 coupon, last night they gave me 3 of them. I'm starting to think they are just trying to liquidate everything.

I see no problems. You can spend points online. They need to downsize bad, market has changed. I wish them to survive one way or another. SYWR is a great thing after all.

Obligatory Sears story:

I made my first Sears purchase in years online only last week and had it sent to K-mart. Yesterday I received a confirmation it was in so I called K-mart to make sure they could find my order, but when I went to pick up the item up - surprise! - they couldn't find it despite what I was told on the phone.  I stood around for 15 minutes until it finally turns up and I went home and opened the box. Another surprise, it's badly damaged so I looked online to see what I needed to do to return it. The website says I can take it back to the store so I got back in the car.

The store clerk was snotty as hell and said they didn't take returns of online orders and pointed to "black and white" language on the invoice asking customers not to take returns to the store, in direct contradiction to what Sears website says in black and white. She makes it clear that she thinks I'm lying about what it says on the website.  She then calls over the manager who contradicts the obnoxious clerk and tells me she knows the website directs people to the store for returns but K-mart computers aren't linked to Sears, there's nothing she can do and she won't take it back. I have to walk out of the store with a damaged item that's still my problem to deal with.

It's no surprise that Sears is going under. Every few years people like me give them another try and Sears has a chance to get it right and win that customer back.  After my experience yesterday I left cursing my own foolishness for buying from them again.

Somehow, my metropolitan area is keeping all three Sears, there haven't been any Sears stores closed here in almost 30 years. The last Kmart left here is going though, I managed to get in there tonight for one last chance on in store "points back" deals on the Smart Sense stuff and furniture.

They are like that because they are going under, not vice versa. Clerks are paid the minimum wage and managers as well are the lowest paid in retail. I had some issues with a local Sears but switched to online delivery only and have zero issues. If some orders are not send by mistake, you chat online and get refund gift card in the email in 3 minutes. Beats my WalMart experience by a huge margin.

I disagree.

I quit buying from Sears and Kmart more than 20 years ago - long before they were failing -  because of similar BS.  Appliance purchase deliveries that weren't scheduled properly and required repeated attempts, warranty service requests where people didn't show up and their service department "had no record" that a service request had been made.  Big ticket purchase procedures and sales staff that made me feel like I had to jump through hoops just to buy from them.  Ridiculous rebate requirements for deliveries.  The list goes on and problems occurred every time I made a purchase that required service of some type.  Add to that Kmart stores that are so poorly maintained that an archaeological expedition is required to go shopping and it's clear that these stores haven't been viable for decades.  Sears management seems to think that their customers have no choice but to buy from them.

Almost every retail store pays minimum wage, but many of Sears ' competitors are very profitable and provide acceptable (or even good) customer service anyway.  In the past 20 years I've purchased a number of expensive appliances from Home Depot, Lowes and elsewhere and have been reasonably happy with the experience.  The same goes for online purchases and the occasional return.  Every store has problems but Sears is a place where problems seem to be the norm.

The fact Sears is going under is because of decades of mismanagement at the executive level.  Sears ' procedures and systems just do not work and haven't for more than 20 years.  Top that off with a lack of training for their employees, and the end result is a customer experience like the one I had this week.

At this point it might be easier to make a list of Sears/K-Mart that are still open.

Thank you for this.

I went to the site and got the message about ad-blocking and of course simply closed the page.  Who in their right mind turns off ad-blocking, or in this case, pays a fee to see the site with fewer ads?  You want to serve ads and prevent me from seeing your website with an ad-blocker?  Then I don't see your site, plain and simple.  And chances are excellent that I can find the same information elsewhere.  Idiots.

Amazingly, none of the Macy's, Sears or Kmart's near me are closing.

If the morgue Kmart nearest me is not closing, how bad are some of the closing ones?!

From the article:  "Stanley said it plans to hire more workers and open a new U.S. plant to make more Craftsman products, but didn’t provide details."

That could mean the companies have been negotiating this sale for a year because back then, Sears said their Craftsman tools would be made in the US again.

Many Stanley hand tools haven't been made by Stanley in some  years but instead are by Apex, an offshoot of Danahar, which bought Easco, and Apex makes almost all the Craftsman mechanics' tools.

The local Sears parts department here is like Sears stores, 30-40 years ago, and it seems all the employees there started with Sears back then because they give great service.

Same here in AZ with Sears.  Must have great benefits/pay for retail..

Not so with Kmart

I made one last trip to mine tonight just before closing to enjoy it's glory before the big "10% off the inflated MSRP" going out of business sale begins. The store was surprisingly well staffed, but it was mostly employees pulling down signs for various offers and putting price stickers on every individual item (since that's what they do when the liquidation begins). I only saw two other customers, the typical older lady type of people I see shopping there, who aren't really there looking for anything in particular but just wheel their cart around to see if they find anything they want, and throw it in their cart if they do. I did find some nice deals on some TV show season sets (seasons of NYPD Blue, The Fall Guy, In Living Color, Archer, Modern Family, and others for $9.99 each). Kind of surprised to find those, since I thought Kmart stopped selling DVDs besides dollar bin DVDs. Though maybe they were just left over on the shelf from 5-10 years ago too. The ones I bought to burn up my points (NYPD Blue and Time Tunnel) all came out over five years ago. The closing store (the last one in my area) actually still has a full electronics department with a register (though I have a feeling nobody has ever actually worked at that register in at least a few years), the other ones that closed in the past few years got rid of most of their electronics and replaced them with mattresses and appliances long before closing.

Call me crazy but one thing I'll miss about Kmart is the 80s music that they play in store while you shop. It's sort of refreshing to hear "Ain't Nobody" by Chaka Kahn, "Looking for a New Love" by Jody Watley, and "Hold on to the Nights" by Richard Marx play while I shopped. All of those played over the crackling AM radio sounding PA system while I shopped. No other store would have that. Maybe they should start an online ShopYourWayRadio for those of us who like that (though there is the online Kmart music archive of tapes from the stores from the late 80s/early 90s). It was almost fitting that "Hold on to the Nights" was the last song I heard as I checked out... it's like the perfect goodbye song. Actually all of those songs describe Kmart pretty well.

I do remember that last time Sears gave me 8 $5 coupons.  It is 8. Got an email said it is ready but they could not find it in pickup area after 1 hour of searching.

Of course, they reordered it and I spent all 8 coupons with 8 different $5 items. Free gifts from Sears.

My local Kmart store is staying open, but they are extremely slow to restock. I cleared their shelves on some items 15 days ago and they still have not restocked those items.

Unless they are earning or using points, I am not sure why anyone would want to shop at Kmart. Prices are high, selection is pitiful, stores are old and broken down.

I ended up with 7 of those a few weeks back. Waited an hour for my 3 orders to be 'found'. Manager claimed there was confusion because I placed too many orders.

My local store is staying open, too.  I buy cat food there because it's a good way to spend points, plus they give me surprise points and pet supply coupons.  They haven't had stock of my cat food (or much other cat food) in at least a month.  I asked an employee about it and she said the supplier(s) are holding up sending them new stock.  I asked if it was part of the bigger Kmart/Sears problems, but she wasn't really following me.

Before the Kmart near me closed (there is still one left in my city that is closing now, but it isn't one I went to regularly), I used to burn my points on 12 packs of soda at Kmart when I couldn't find them on sale elsewhere. After a while, I noticed the particular sodas that I was buying (mostly Pepsi and Sprite) would no longer be in stock. And I noticed that the ones that I didn't buy were staying on the shelf (including plain regular Coca Cola, Diet Coke, and Coke Zero) and were expiring. Even after they expired, their stock stayed on the shelf until the day that store closed, roughly 6-12 months later, just every now and then somebody would buy one, and the ones I wanted were never restocked at all in that particular store all the way through the time they closed.

You know it's bad when a store can't sell their very limited inventory of 12 packs of Coca Cola, and when one individual customer (me) can buy out their Pepsi and Sprite inventory over roughly a one year period despite the fact that I'm not even a heavy soda drinker (a 12 pack of soda lasts me at least a month). I always thought the soda companies came in and handled inventory on these things, including removing expired stuff and restocking what was out of stock. I'm not even sure what Kmart does, but it sounds like their procedures are very different.
