Many of these Dell printers look very similar to Brother models - and I swear by Brother printers. Does anyone know if Brother is the OEM for Dell printers? Toner compatibility if so?

Thanks! Yes, Brother makes some, not all, of the Dell printers. The others are made by other companies. In the past Lexmark made most of them, but they use others more now. While Dell is always careful to make sure you have to buy their ink/toner (at significantly higher than average prices), in fact Brother toners can sometimes be used in similar model Dell printers will a little fiddling. For instance this Dell e515dw uses a toner nearly identical to the Brother TN-660. On inspection it turns out the only real difference is the one plastic gear that engages with the printer is a different size. Simply moving that gear from a Dell toner for this printer to a generic Brother TN-660 allows it's use in the Dell printer.
