Pay attention when buying legos of the age on the front. This will keep your child from getting frustrated. For me, I love the CITY ones. They have so many to choose from.

I think they are conservative on the age. My son started playing the City starter sets (rated 5 and up) at age of 3. At age 4 he built 900+ pieces City sets pretty much all on his own (which were rated age 6 and up). Only occasionally he needed help on making sure the pieces were pressed securely enough, otherwise the structures may fall apart as he put on more pieces.

A brick separator is a very useful tool so he can take  the pieces apart on his own if he makes mistakes. It came with some sets I believe but I don't remember which one. But it didn't it's definitely worth paying a couple bucks just for it. It takes the frustration away when they realize they put the pieces at the wrong place.
