393 is the number left in stock, I believe.

Here's a review of the R52 from June of '05.

Laptop Mag Review

I'm tempted to cancel my Dell 640m order (recent FW deal, shipping delayed until end of June) and go with this for my first laptop. Any guru's out there care to compare?

not bad. R series are generally hugeified tho.

It's the older Pentium M and not dual core. Also low memory, small HD, and no DVD writer. That's about the going retail price for that machine, especially if you'd be upgrading any of that. I think you can do better with some of the newer laptops for about the same price.

All that said, I have one of these and it's not a bad machine. Think I paid about the same for mine probably 2 or 3 years ago (new, surplus stock w/ 3 year warranty). Still going and it's fine for basic day-to-day use.

I just watched it go from 392 to 390 so I would have to agree.

I called them and you are correct, thanks. 390 left right now

Im in 4 1.

More specs from the Lenovo site, for what appears to be the build....

Product: ThinkPad R52 1849-5SU [change]

Operating system: All [change]

Original description: P M 740(1.7GHz), 512MB RAM, 40GB 5400rpm HDD, 14.1in 1024x768 LCD, 64MB ATI Radeon X300, CD-RW/DVD, Intel 802.11bg wireless(MPCI), Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip, IEEE 1394, 6 cell Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro

A couple heads-ups,

This is not a widescreen, and that's not bad - many people prefer the older traditional aspect ratio. The optical drive is an ultrabay item - so you could easily upgrade. Might accept a second battery - and if not, a 9 cell 7 amp battery is availble for extreme life. Might be Centrino certified with that processor and design for long battery life (I gather that from the 740 processor and the "CENT" at the end of the description. As far as I can tell, it has the keyboard light. Can't tell on the fingerprint reader.

Looks to me like this is a true business class, honest to goodness Thinkpad that you can't get at a discount store near you. At $499, it's a steal. Sure you can get a hotter processor and more features on a Sunday deal or a reburp, but this is in a different class.

Edit - IN FOR ONE!!!!!!

Ya know, I am tired of buying junk $399 and $499 specials that have every option except quality. They are cheap up front, they are fast up front, they look pretty with nice finishes and when I dump them because I don't like them, they resell well on FeeBay as a lightly used laptop. This is a different ballgame. 40GB is large enough of a hard drive, I don't HAVE to have a DVD burner, I don't want widescreen, I do want long battery life and I want something that I'll want to keep. I think I've got it.

Also unless there is an exemption with the outlet store, don't forget 6% FatCash back.

Measuring in at 12.4" x 10.4" x 1.35", with a weight starting at 5.8 pounds (our R52 sample weighed at 6.12 lbs), the IBM ThinkPad R series is a budget solution from IBM for the mainstream market. But keep in mind, this doesn't mean that it is a value solution. Rather the R series has been centered around a good "all-purpose" profile, with the typical flair for the business user. IBM doesn't do multimedia oriented designs in the same way Dell or HP do, so if you are looking for something of that nature; you should probably look elsewhere. The R series is better suited for the professional or general consumer that needs a well rounded notebook for occasional to frequent mobility. If you are constantly on the go though, look at the T or X series. And the G series is better left to those who need more power.

OK, I'm in for one. Thanks to all for your input.

The deciding factor for me is that this is $200 less than the config I had of the D3ll 640m ($150 less after I bump up the RAM). It's not as powerful as the 640m, but it's good enough for my use, and most importantly, it is scheduled to ship tomorrow.

Now I'm off to find a deal on some PC2-4200 RAM...I assume the pre-installed 512K is 2x256K DIMMs?

It doesn't seem to be discounted any even though it's on clearnce. The regular price is $499 and the clearance price is $499.

Does R mean regret?
just kidding

Are these brand new, used, or refurbished?

Is there any way to upgrade this wifi to more than 802.11? Thanks.

They are relatively well-built machines. I've dragged mine all over and back and (like all of the Thinkpads I've had) it's held up well to abuse. Basically, it's a T Series in a slightly more thick plastic case. But not a cheezy plastic case - no flex when typing, good metal hinges, etc. Nothing's cracked or broken as far as that goes on mine or on an older R40 that I had.

The only real problems that I've had with the R Series are with the fans. They run a LOT and as a result they eventually wear out. Don't die, but they'll start getting noisy, running off center, and clicking when they hit against the housing. Fairly easy to swap out and surplus parts are easy to find at good prices. Power adapters also tend to short out at the point where the more thin wire attaches to the block if you pull at them and let the twist as they tend to do.

You can swap a second battery into the bay but it adds weight, takes up the DVD/CD bay, and those usually are a lot more expensive than the standard batteries. Better for most people to just get a second standard battery. You can find the DVD writers, floppy, etc., that fit into the same bay. That's one good thing about the Thinkpads - there are tons of parts out there and you usually can find a decent deal on anything that you need.

Newegg has several external DVD burners for around $60 or so.

thekid72 said: Question to self...

Why is it that people have to have gigabit ethernet and 54mbps wireless, when the source feed is nowhere near that spec?

INTRANET

Coincidentally, I bumped into a R52 down stairs in the lab today at work. This is a hefty notebook - thick and heavy. And the screen touches the keys when closed, so it will develop key-haze down the road.

But at this price, those are awesome specs for a Thinkpad notebook PC.

Tempted, but no.

Your pipe to the interwebzors may not be >50mbps, but there are plenty of broadband providers that are >11mpbs. As for gigE, that's more for intranet usage.

I ordered 2 of these and never owned a laptop before. That is interesting about the possibility of key-haze.

What about a screen protecter like this? Would this be a wise purchase for my new laptops?

What could be max HDD capacity? Is 100GB OK? Thanks

it should be brand new. A month ago I bought a T60 from the outlet for $949 and it was brand new with 3-year warranty.

From the Lenovo pop-up spec sheet says 12.1 lbs!!!

Is that right??? The review from laptopmag says a more reasonalbe 5.8lbs.

Still trying to decide whether or not to pull the trigger on this or a comparable d3ll. I'm just using it for basic office stuff and internet.

Any comments on the screen? Is it good quality? That's the one thing I can stand is a flimy, low contrast screen...

12.1lbs???

scare me...

I've owned 4 thinkpads now and despite some problems with some of them (600 series battery issue, one screen died, USB ports on an A41P broke off) they are just rock solid hard workin' machines (all laptops have problems, thinkpads have good warranty coverage).

If I can verify the weight on this bad boy, I'm gonna pull the trigger. Brand new real honest to goodness ThinkpadŽ for less than 500 clams? Oh yeah baby, count me in!

-m:Dnkey-

12 lbs must be the shipping weight. No way it's that heavy alone. More like 6 lbs. as in the OP. It's a little heavier than the T but not a lot.

in 4 1 . Thanks.
