I may have to pull out my AARP Visa or Santander Bank Bravo for 3% cash back on restaurants as a compromise. Neither has UR points.
Bravo is 3% cash back groceries too, but the points needed to collect is higher.

Hard to do, I have a 8 mile round trip commute and the wife only drives 5 miles per day. Would be buying gas gift cards for years to max it out.

Where do you get your car serviced?  My regular mechanic owns a Shell station.  They laugh when I sometimes pay a $300 maintenance/repair bill with a stack of $50 gift cards.

My local grocery chain operates gas stations that are coded as gas stations. The gas stations sell gift cards that are usable in the grocery store. Many other gas stations also sell GCs.

I am certain of it, which means I'm much more likely be be getting my gas at Costco in Q1.

Buy a costco gift card in store, then use the gift card on all gas purchases. This ensures you will actually get the 5% and not have to guess

Chase Freedom and Discover qualify in-store or at the pump.

BofA Cash Rewards and Chase AARP work for gas (3% year round) in-store or at the pump.
BofA AAA Visa (3% year round) only works at the pump with a maximum of $2 per day reward.

AMEX offers are usually pay at the pump only.  Royal Farms offer was an exception.

Hmm, good idea. Will have to figure out if this is the case at the Fry's (Kroger) gas stations.

Yes. I have been using Penfed Cash Rewards Visa card (5% gas statement credit) at Costco gas station.

Oh snap. Costco has great employee pay and bennies, great products and prices and customer service. And cheap gas. What's there to despise?

Um, huh?  Either you're confused or I am.  If we're talking about Q1, then if you go inside Costco and buy a gift card, then you're guaranteed *not* to get 5%; you'll get only 1%, because only gas will be 5%, not warehouse clubs which is how Costco store codes.  Now if you're saying that you go into the store *this* quarter (Q4) and buy gift cards with Freedom and stockpile them to use at the pump in Q1, then, yes you'll be effectively getting 5%.  Alternatively, if you have Discover, you could buy Costco g/c at costco.com using your Discover card in Q1 and use *those* at the Costco pumps for effectively 5%.

But easiest in Q1 to just use the Freedom directly at the Costco pump for 5%.

Chris.

They play games with membership renewals for people who haven't visited in a few months.  There was a major class action suit about it a few years ago.

Honestly, there is never a time that the local Costco is not busy. I simply choose to not pay for the luxury of waiting in line and dealing with other rude customers. Dropped them 4 years ago and haven't been happier. We can replicate all of their deals shopping local grocer's ads. We are very light consumers, so their electronics and other items don't do much for us.

I got 5% on my pay at the pump gas and 1% on the gift card.

I guarantee Costco gas pumps will count for 5% on the Freedom starting Tuesday. I will get a couple gallons and let you know. If it doesn't, I'll refund the price you paid for this post.

I did the last of my grocery shopping Monday, June 26th, buying both food and gift cards.  I think I'm up to roughly $1400, though I still have some pending items.  These should settle into the account by Friday, but the situation does raise this question:

Does Chase, when crediting Freedom bonus points, go by the purchase date . . . or by the date a charge actually finally hits your account?

I believe that they go with the transaction date, but I would suggest not trying to find out.  Make your purchases now.

I finished off the last of my three Freedom cards last week and have all of the points already.
