Depends on your card and the option they offer. Some allow you to buy extended warranty for low price, which may be better than the standard extra year they give you.

Some Credit Card companies have contracts with certain repair companies (Like AHS), and they pay them directly.

Maybe. It varies by issuer. Google your card plus appliance repair for likely results. Or name it here.

Buy your fridge from Costco using the Costco credit card and call it a day.

AMEX - You call an authorized repair center (must be manufacturer authorized), get repair and send proof for a credit.

Double check with card issuer/warranty company and inquire if the benefit will include large appliances such as refrigerators.  There are a lot of convenient exclusions.

  ^This^
Costco extends the warranty (a one year warranty becomes two years), and the Costco Visa card adds two more years.  Most cards add just one year.

CitiBank doubles the manufacturer's warranty - if your frig came with a 1 yr mfr warranty, with CitiBank they would double that warranty for a total of 3 years. If you need to make a claim, you can use the repair provider of your choice, too. Also, the Citi Double Cash credit card gives you 2% cash back. Their Price Rewind card benefit is very Handy, too.

I've never bought a fridge but shouldn't a good one come with at least a 5 year warranty on the compressor? Like GE http://products.geappliances.com/MarketingObjectRetrieval/Dispat...

Isn't this really just protection from an abnormal early failure? Most fridges are going to last ten years, and credit card isn't going to stretch it to 20.

With Mastercard, apparently not nearly as well as with Amex and Visa.  I don't know about Discover.

Yes, 5 years on compressor and 1 year for everything else.

i used the chase united plus card. looks like it doubles the warranty.

Read the fine print on the benefits info provided with the card to understand how it works. Also search fatwallet as there have been a few good threads about this in the recent past.

Isn't that what all warranties are for? It's still valuable to have coverage for slightly less abnormal but still early failures.

Extended warranty comes with a major credit card usually extends the manufacturer’s warranty for up to a year longer. Every issuer will have a different process, but you will require being sure to keep your original receipt and a copy of the manufacturer’s warranty. When you file for the claim, you’ll ask for specific details about the fridge, such as its serial number, and model number.
