Looking for an upgrade from a point and shoot camera for the parents. Found the Pentax Q 12.4 MP digital compact system camera for sale for $239.99 (regular price $499.99) at Best Buy.

The description is vague about the kind of lens that is included, but I figure it should be enough for the parents.

Very nice and interesting camera.

Looks like a 3x optical lens (5mm-15mm, F2.8-F4.5)

Too bad it takes Q-mount instead of K-mount ... lots of great old lenses to be had with the K.

the pentax q sensor size is 1/2.3". it's in no man's land. if you buy an interchangeable lens camera (ILC) you're buying into a system of lenses. high quality glass would be limited by the maximum resolution of the sensor.

over the 2012 holidays retailers were selling:
the nikon v1/j1 ILC kits for approximately $300, which have a 1" sensor.
olympus xz-1, $200, (Amazon), 1/1.6"
canon s100, $250 (Amazon), 1/1.7"
panasonic lx-7, $300, 1/1.7"

i did not do any research into the micro 4/3 system cameras or great deals on them during that period, but this could provide a baseline of options.
