This is a great deal for a solid mid/low-level smartphone. Looks very handsome with tons of bright color options. Tons of colorful accessories. Has great reviews, IMO way better than the android smartphones sold at this price point. The Lumia 521 is the lowest priced windows 8 smartphone yet. Solid phone as a first smartphone, for parents and Kids. A proper smartphone with very few compromises at this price.

Luckily Windows phone is not a processing or Memory hog like Android. So This should be pretty snappy still

Very interesting, and appealing. Are these typically on display in the T-Mobile stores? I would love to put my hands on one before deciding. I was getting ready to order a Blackberry Curve 9315, but was hesitating because of the now outdated OS, I was also considering one of the Windows 7.5 phones, but once again didn't want to put a couple hundred dollars into a phone that is already obsolete.
I currently have an Exhibit II 4G, which is OK, but like the Blackberry and Windows OS a lot better. If I can put my hands on one and it isn't too bulky, I think I will go with this one.

It looks like that it does not come with Gorrila Glass.
If you look at the specs ( and all of the you tube videos of its announcement) the front of the phone is black but the back is white ( which is what is listed on the specs at HSN). The good thing is that the back's are swappable, you can buy a replacement back of a different color eventually. I dont know about the Gorilla glass.
I'm waiting for mine to come, im fine with white but might end up swapping it out later

It should work with T-Mobile MVNO, like Ptel etc out of box.
hmm.. Black only from HSN? Actually, it could be any color from HSN? You can't pick a color.

I went for the Nokia 521 after reading about it here and thought I'd give some feedback. I do not have any previous smartphone experience, but I've enjoyed the added features this phone brings. I also do not have a data plan, as I'm stingy and don't feel like I need it with Wifi at work and home. This did lead to a problem of my own design.
For the first month after I got the phone, I was unable to send or receive picture messages. After a lengthy call to T-Mobile, that problem has been solved. Slightly paranoid of the possibility of using unpurchased data, I turned the off the data connection on the phone. I figured that it would help prevent accidental browsing. Unknowingly, this disabled my ability to send and receive picture messages. Since that problem has been fixed, I have had no complaints.
