Bought this router when it was available NIB on a special for $49.99 AR. Plan was to install DD-WRT onto it. Although it's supposed to be DD-WRT compatible, and although I've loaded DD-WRT onto numerous routers over the years, this model router was particularly stubborn. My best guess is that when DD-WRT compatibility was originally added, it was done w/ an older hardware revision and something's changed w/ the router since then. After scouring the web for a while, learned (from a YouTube video) of some old DD-WRT version that ended up being compatible (don't recall what DD-WRT version that was nor do I recall router HW revision I received, but it was maybe 2 - 3 months ago). Wasn't interested in running an outdated version of DD-WRT version so ended up returning it. Should also mention that while attempting to load DD-WRT Kong onto the router, it got bricked.
Have since switched to the RT-AC68[U|W] (U=Black, W=White), which successfully loads both regular DD-WRT as well as DD-WRT KONG (KONGAC). Best deal I've found yet (NIB) on that model was on Amazon Prime Day (for $109.99). Have also seen that model on-sale (refurb'd) for $99.99.

Asuswrt-Merlin firmware works great. I've installed it on a few different RT-N66's. The cheapest deals I've seen on this router this year were black refurb for $50 or white new for $50 after $30 MiR.
