T-Mobile (the network Metro PCS rides) offers phone unlocking for free as long as whatever device can be unlocked. Keep in mind that not all devices work on all services. You can use T-Mobile/Metro PCS devices on Verizon and vice versa but it's usually not worth the hassle and from what I'm aware sometimes it's impossible, specially for anything below 4G. It's the whole CDMA vs. GSM thing. Cell phone companies operate under one of two types of networks; either CDMA or GSM. Of the four biggest US carriers, AT&T and T-Mobile run on 'GSM' networks, while Sprint and Verizon Wireless use 'CDMA'.

This covers all the Networks and how to get your phone unlocked as well as numbers to contact. Also explains CDMA and GSM a bit better. Most offer the code for free and usually it's not too big of a hassle to do it on your own.
