Costco is going to sell this phone with $55 coupon during thanksgiving sale, right? So, is that going to be much cheaper than this price? There is also $75 Costco Gift for those activated new line with any carrier in Costco phones. is that not a better than this?

They are going to sell the G4 AFAIK not the Play. The 32 GB goes for $229 on Amazon right now. There are 3 versions of the G4. G4, G4 Plus and G4 Play. All 3 phones are carrier agnostic and can be used on some MVNOs and the primary carriers AFAIK. There is also a specific Verizon G4 Play that was/is $65 at Best Buy.

thanks. What is AFAIK in Moto G4. Is that a variant?

I've been looking at the Moto G4 as a replacement for my current phone. From the reviews/comparisons I've read, most are saying that if you can swing the extra money, go for the G4 Plus. Better camera, better processor, etc... Of course, it all depends on what deals can be found for the plus. I'm hoping Black Friday will offer up some great ones.

The coupon for the G4 at Costco is "when you activate the phone by 12/31/2016 at Costco Wireless Center on a new line of service".  I would imagine if you are willing to get a new line of service there are better subsidized phones out there.

G4 and G4 Plus have the same processor....        Main differences are camera details and fingerprint scanner.

the Costco deal is $174.99 with a $75 mail in rebate and a bonus accessory 5200 mAh portable battery when new line of service is activated by 12/31.

re the Costco deal: what if we were to cancel one of the 5 lines we have with our AT&T family plan now and then re-activate that line in late December? would that qualify as a 'new line of service'? I know this is a sleaze tactic, but maybe a few other FW'ers are thinking along the same lines?

Note: This is the G4 Play, NOT the G4. Very different beast.

As long as the line is out of contract, that should be fine, as you are signing up and doing a new 2-year contract for the new line. Just don't plan on keeping the same #, but there is always Google Voice to take care of that problem
