Free $500 printer when you purchase 12 spools of filament didn't seem like a bad price.

Shipping is $95 estimate via ground for me. No cheaper options cited.

The free printer in question is their da Vinci 1.0 3D Printer

Reviews are mixed on that model. 35% 1 star reviews at Amazon.

The filament is in cartridges which seem to be 600g each and ~$28. Monoprice has 1kg for ~$20.

So your net cost is $431 for $140 worth of filament and a mixed review printer.

On its face it seems like a good deal but it may not be a good deal vs finding a good 3D printer for $200-300 and buying standard filament versus their over priced cartridges.

This printer uses proprietary filament cartridges. It is largely shunned by the 3D printing community. You are much better off with a Monoprice printer.

Like buying an HP printer for $50 only to find out the ink will set you back $60 everytime.

While I agree with this statement, be prepared to put some time in to keep the printer working.  You can get some excellent prints but you will need to puts some effort in to the process.

If you can find a good deal on the Da Vinci Pro model it does accept filament from 3rd parties.

In this case, they are selling you some highly overpriced ink cartridges along with a free below-mediocre printer, to keep you hooked onto the overpriced ink cartridges.

i personally bought one of the originals years ago, and also bought a cartridge flash resetter, and use 3rd party filaments with an empty box stuck in the slot.

I bought one of these: https://www.monoprice.com/Product?p_id=15365 for my son, and I assumed that it would be garbage, but I didn't care because I also assumed he'd get bored with it and not use it. I was wrong about both things, it works great AND he loves using it.

You can reset the filaments, but the shipping really kills the deal. I can't seem to get shipping to go under $124.

edit: shipping to california is cheaper ($86) but they'll collect the $71 in sales taxes for you.
