not sure about the second part, but yes Fire tablets have Alexa deals

Black Friday price.
Note these are 1024 x 600; lower than any other Fire HD ever made:
(5th gen 7" not on that chart for some reason)

It takes a couple hoops, but you can fastboot into TWRP and install a ROM on these. ggow at XDA, the CM based one was EOL'ed when CM went sideways / became Lineage.

He has another AOSP based ROM that is frankly easier to install and maintain than the the CM based one was, due to being able to bundle everything into one OTA zip to be flashed. Comes with GApps, XPosed, Root/SuperSU.
It is available here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/orig-development/ro...
I have successfully upgraded with FlashFire with this rom untethered multiple times. ggow puts out fairly regular updates. Note, it is based on 5.1.x Lollipop; still getting security patches though!

One major upside is it has an mSD slot, I have a 128GB card in mine; so media storage is not a problem. It CANNOT multitask however, as it only has 1GB of RAM.

This install install is a little weird, as Amazon has a weird booloader; you have to have the android-platform-tools to flash over USB the first time (adb&fastboot); it's fairly well explained here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/orig-development/tw...

For completeness, here is the retired CM based ROM: https://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/orig-development/ro...

Can we get a translation on this, for the
 less intelligent.

Does a kindle have to have a prime account to work? I'm thinking for kids whose only internet access is at school, who don't have families with credit.

No. If you have a regular account as I do, you can still get the free Underground apps from the Amazon app store.
