Is there a way I can hook this up to my home receiver and have the receiver play the music ?

Yes - one of two ways:

If your receiver natively supports Bluetooth device connectivity, then the Echo can pair with it.   Done.

If your receiver doesn't support Bluetooth audio sources, then pick up a Bluetooth audio receiver (such as this Logitech unit ) and you can use it as a bridge between the Echo and your receiver. Just make sure your receiver has a spare input, and pick up a unit that supports whatever connection type you'll be using (RCA vs Optical, mainly). The Logitech unit is a bit dated, admittedly, and wouldn't work so well with video; if you really care and want to shell out a bit more money you can also get a unit that supports receiving and transmitting, RCA and Optical and supports aptX (HD audio) and aptX low latency (better sync with video) such as this TaoTronics unit

Of course, if you're going to solely use external speakers than you've basically turned your Echo into an Echo Dot...

Excellent answer, and yes, it is basically becomes a Dot (although the microphones are better with the Echo than a Dot, so that's a plus).  In other words, if you plan on hooking it up to external speakers, you might be better off getting a Dot.  The Dot has an external audio outlet and you could use that to connect to the RCA inputs of a receiver.  You wouldn't even need to use a Bluetooth device.

FYI, we have enjoyed our Echo and Dot, but Alexa is embarrassingly poor at answering questions, compared to Cortana or Google. I am quite surprised Amazon has not improved this aspect, since Alexa has been around for a while now.

Instead of going through the hassle of hooking it up to our Plex server for music, I went ahead and paid the yearly fee to upload my MP3 collection to Amazon. It was worth it for me, but it still would be nice if Plex and Amazon could come up with a better way to interface.
