These are good drives. I got a couple last time too. They even both came with D820 drive caddies!
They are Seagate's but only the 8MB Cache buffer size. Still a good deal though!

THANKS OP. I missed this the last time it was up a few weeks ago because I was busy arguing with Dell trying to get them to honor a $100 gift certificate they gave me that I failed to notice had an expiration date. "Customer Care" (now THERE is an oxymoron for you - like military intelligence or jumbo shrimp.......) said gosh sorry but nothing i can do for you. If i could get it anywhere else for this price i would in a second. ah yes, the free market system at work.

From my search on Newegg, all seagate 2.5 HD with 7200 rpm are 8MB. xD! Go seagate xD

I just bought 7k200 200gb hitachi drive for around $189 AR shipped. Factor in a free Harry Potter book 7 too.
Since Dell has tax for most states, so for me, consider the cost for Harry Potter book 7, it is around $50 more. Is it worth it? a 40GB extra storage and 20% faster drvie than the seagate 7200.2.

Any thought which to keep?

The Dell page doesn't seem to mention the warranty. I take it that the warranty is thru the mfg probably, but it is odd for Dell not to mention the warranty.

On the website, it sounds as though this will only work in Dell laptops. I find it hard to believe this HD is proprietary only for Dell. Does anyone know if this will work in any SATA laptop?

The deal sounds good, but I want to clarify the following questions before pulling the trigger:
1) Is this drive compatible for most of laptops, like my IBM/Lenovo T60/X60/X60s?
2) How can I move my whole Operating System on my preload hard drive to this one if I plan to update?

Can anyone help me out?

I got the same drive for my T60 and it fits properly. But you need to remove the Dell caddy by removing the two screws and fit the one that is provided by Lenovo which contains to side rubber rails and a metal plate.

You can use the acronis true image to clone the hard drive.

Well, that's the thing. There is no warranty unless you use it in a Dell system. Essentially, you get a 30 day warranty on the purchase itself.

Isn't the drive you bought with the book 16MB Cache? If so, keep it.

Yeah.. Hitachi 7k200 is 16MB cache. storage review seems to suggest that it is 20-25% faster than the seagate 7200.2. Just not sure if it worths the premium of $50.

Yeah, completely sure. I bought a notebook HD from them in the past and this is a dealbreaker for me.

Thanks for the info. Neweggg for me then.

By the way, one of my Hitachi Travelstar notebook drives had the click of death. No problem, it was probably still within warranty. I go to Hitachi and enter the microsized serial number. Guess what? No warranty on this drive. I guess H.P./Compaq had bought them oem and was providing its own warranty. So the drive mfg did not warrantee the drive.

I guess this is what De11 is doing.

Any HDD comes with the laptop will fall under the SAME warranty of the laptop, not separately. For instance, while most HDD provides at least 3 years warranty, if it comes with your laptop AND you have 1 year warranty on your laptop, your HDD get one year warranty only as well. I have no idea on a drive purchased separately though, but if it is Dell branded, most likely you'll only get 1 year warranty or even less, which all depends on Dell or whoever who sell that to you. It is very likely that you cannot return that drive directly to the HDD manufacturer for RMA. Could be good, could be bad... most HDD manufacturer will give you refrub. drives on RMA. I'm not sure about something like Dell since you know they do NOT manufacture HDD... so, they should not have any refrub. drives to return to you for RMA.

I just got on chat with a Dell representative, and BE_Rep_Minolette said that 1. "it has a 1 yr. warranty" and 2. "the item has 1 yr.wararnty even if you done use it in d620." [sic]

So maybe Minolette is wrong, but that's my understanding.

EDIT: Another rep told me today that the part itself has no warranty and is covered under the return policy. But I should probably call to make sure. Ugh.

EDIT2: Called. Service Rep confirmed 1 yr warranty.

if you know how to use a screwdriver and have some knowledge of computer parts, it should be a no-brainer. its the easiest part of the laptop to upgrade besides the RAM, imo. BTW, GREAT deal OP!

Maybe Dell's policies have changed since 1 year ago, but I have bought a hard drive from Dell before on a similar deal, and they denied me the warranty when it failed (45 days after) because I was using the hard drive in my Thinkpad. The reason: this hard drive gets its warranty coverage from the computer in which it is used.

I'll be diplomatic and say that the warranty is YMMV. But even then, a 1-year warranty is not much compared to a 5-year warranty from Seagate.

I am not seeing any discount when selected paypal.
I even tried to use pay by credit card option to see if I am offered any discount as Dell preferred memeber without any luck.

no it should work with any paypal account. you won't see the discount until you go from Dell to paypal to login, then you select bank or credit card in paypal and should see the discount then and takes you back to Dell to check out. Dell with list it as:

Save 10% off products in the following categories when you purchase using PayPal. Discount applies to : desktop accessories; notebook accessories; surge protection and backup; networking; storage; mp3 players; printers; digital cameras and projectors.

I've been really happy to see that Seagate (and Hitachi, I believe) have a free basic version of Acronis True image which can clone disks. I'm not sure if the drive will come with it on a CD, but if not, you can download it (free) here (If the link doesn't work, go to Seagate.com, Download Center, then download Discwizard).

Its called Discwizard, but its just a branded version of True Image without some more advanced functions (like scheduling backups).

I've used it to upgrade hard drives in a few computers at work and it works great.
