Sweet.. all we need now is a vessel that can get there really fast. Find a wormhole or something. Even at speed of light 39 years is too much.

39 light years away. For reference, distance from sun to earth is 8 light minutes, 19 light seconds.

But do they have good beer on TRAPPIST-1?

No, but your wife does.

I find it fascinating the distances, age of the universe and quantity of stars and galaxies in the universe. We're basically stuck on earth looking through telescopes at stuff back in time that are enormous light years from us. The nearest spiral galaxy out of billions of them (maybe trillions) is Andromeda. It's "only" 2.5 million light years away. "Just around the corner."

Stephen Hawking's microchip-sized space probes could theoretically get there and beam back pictures in about two hundred years. That's not *great* but we could spend the two hundred years developing the tech needed to colonize.

One of my favourite Google Doodles. Brings a smile to my face. And great discovery...

Attached image has some good info.

Basically, the 3 planets they are interested in are D, E and F
  D E F
Year (in days) 4.05 6.1 9.21
Distance (compared to distance between our earth and sun) 2.1% 2.8% 3.7%
Radius (when compared to our earth) 77% 92% 104%
Mass (when compared to our earth) 41% 62% 68%

I've always thought that the flaw in our planet search was that if you looked at our solar system, mercury, Venus earth and mars would all look "earth-like".

Identify these planets by their outline.

Didn't he also say we shouldn't advertise our presence?  Those darn aliens may want our jobs!

Technically, a microscopic probe traveling at one fifth the speed of light  that communicates with a laser beam is as undetectable as you can get
