I heard on the news that the latest cyber attack/ransom affected multiple countries.

I am just curious.  Does using a VPN prevent these attacks?

No. Your computer can be infected based on sites you visit or emails you open. Regardless of whether or not you use a VPN

And these hospitals don't keep backups.

BTW this exploited 2 kinds of people.

1) Those who don't update their computers (Bad Bad IT Department)
2) Those who are running windows XP.
