[not sure if this the right place for that question]

Does anybody use Qwant ?†

I just read something about that on a French Forum:

"Qwant ensures that your privacy is protected, and this is the cornerstone of our philosophy.
We donít use any cookie nor any tracking device ..... "

I read all about it, but nothing beats having "real person"'s opinions

pro:
"as far as I've tested it, its search results are more pertinent than DuckDuckGo ones"

con:
"Qwant offers Yahoo/Bing results... "

Well unless you really need to hide from the Government, I'm not sure why you would want to use it.

Or just use a VPN.

† AdBlock Plus?† Haven't seen ads in years...

I'll look into that, thanks

† I don't think Qwant is going to give you anymore better than Chrome or Explorer.
Secure browsers usually disable so many features you can't even get the 'experience' of the website you are visiting.

That's why I recommended Opera, comes with an ad blocker and 'mostly' looks like the big 3.

I like†Chrome .
I don't even use IE or Firefox anymore.

Security is not my main concern as I mostly visit the same sites every time.

You can also try StartPage / Ixquick

(they used to more different from each other than they now are - there do still seem to be some differences, what exactly I am not sure)

You can also try MetaGer (English language version)

I don't like DuckDuckGo very much, but they seem to do better than the others when I am looking up phone numbers and trying to find who is behind them (regarding unknown/unwanted landline calls, checking into whether to block or not)

My brother in law [computer geek] likes†DuckDuckGo.

I'll try that for phone numbers: it used to be easier a few years ago to†look up phone numbers.

Thanks

If security isn't the issue.

Why do you want to use Qwant?

rated:
Some people on a Forum reported they like it - no ads, without having to ad extra programs like†AdBlock, ..

rated:
Then give it a try, I'll be waiting here with Chrome..haha

If you tried opera and didn't like it because you liked Chrome, I doubt you will like it Qwant better.

And to each his own but what's with wanting to avoid a third-party add-in like adblock plus?† In my opinion, it's better this way as the adblock people can focus on blocking ads and the Firefox (or whatever browser) people can focus on the browser.

I used Adaware for many years, and my complaint was that, like many of these programs, they did not update them.

I had a slow computer on dial-up , and it became too much of a pain.

During the year, I go on the Internet only once a day [Library] and adds were just an annoyance.

These past 2 weeks [staying in campground with WIFI], I have been on line constantly, and I started to see things differently.

I am going back "on the road" Tuesday [very spotty Internet], so I won't be back on FW for a while.

Thanks all for your suggestions.

Adaware is very different than AdBlock Plus.† Just saying.† One is a third-party program that either passively or actively scans for malware.† The other is a browser plugin to block ads.

Not even sure if AdAware is even still out there.† Wasn't that Lavasoft's program?† Definitely one of the forerunners but it's been years since I've used it.

AdBlock plus on the other hand is a necessity for me, and it's updated very frequently and I can't remember the last time I saw an ad.† Occasionally I will have to disable it in order to get a web site to render properly.† Aside from that, I can think of no negatives.

It doesn't factor into your OP about privacy (it doesn't do anything to protect your privacy) but it definitely takes care of ads.

At any rate, godspeed to you!

Anyone tried the Brave browser? It's made by the guy who co-founded Mozilla and invented Javascript. It's supposed to have ad blocking and tracker blocking built in. Is this worthy of a new topic? Hmm...

† I'd also like to know if anyone has used brave or can recommend other less privacy invasive alternatives to google.

†I'm becoming increasingly concerned about the amount of personal data being compiled. † A †vendor approached our company about selling their marketing database subscription. †They demonstrated their program. The data includes income, age, †number of children, ethnicity, †home address, home phone, cell phone, photo and interests (apparently derived from social networks), etc. † † †

After seeing a demonstration, I wondered how long it will be before unscrupulous people use this data to prey on unsophisticated or elderly people.

Why, people already prey on those people.

We call them Nigerian Princes, or people who sell things door to door.

Yeah except today technology makes it far easier to scam the elderly by selective targeting victims based upon their income, age, household occupancy, marital status, etc.

That said, I haven't gotten used to it yet because I barely use it. I think I need to make it my primary browser and break my patterns.
