We are a family of four adults and two children. We plan to travel to NYC for the first time, and are on a tight budget. Would you reccomend purchasing the NYC card and the Hop on Hop off transport? We will be in town for three full days, and want to see the sights, but don't want to be too exhausted or tapped out at the end of the day.

Typically you can find a 10% off coupon code or some other promotion to bring the price tag down a little. Check out retailmenot, citysights has a promo code 10OFFCS. Personally, I think the hop on-hop off is worth it, from a short visit standpoint. The guides are hit and miss though, some are completely awesome and they know tons about the city, while others are equivalent to Burger King trainees.

You could use the multi-day tour pass as a 'scenic' route bus pass and bypass the subway since there aren't any unlimited day fares, only a 7 day pass. Some may suggest experience being a 'local', but the city is way too big and your time is way too short to do that on a first time around.

We bought hop on / Hop off tickets for family members from Viator. It was cheaper and then we found an additional coupon from retail-me-not and they offer FW CashBack. We even had to make a name change, called up, talked to someone immediately and it was done without issue in a few minutes.

$45 from Viator

Subway is pretty good...
