A family member will be spending 4 months in Europe studying abroad and is thinking of buying a 3-month Eurail Global Pass for about $1,270.  She plans to travel most weekends she is there and also during her 10-day Fall break in October, but as of today her itinerary is up in the air.  Any one with recent experience on this?  Is it worth it?  Would it make more sense to buy the train tickets there on the spot?  Thanks.

We travelled in Europe by train a couple of years ago. In our case individual tickets came out much cheaper. I would compare ticket prices at RAILEUROPE website and see what would be the best value. There are also passes that cover a combination of countries/number of days vs. entire continent. Your quote feels unnecessary high.

RIP OFF.  Not only will individual tickets be cheaper, but for longer travel, it is usually much cheaper within Europe to buy a plane ticket.  Our family's plane tickets from Cologne to Marseille cost about $15 each last September.  Don't buy that rail pass.

RailEurope is a broker and does not give the best price nor all train times. To get the best price you ALWAYS go to the individual train sites. You also want to do this when train tickets release to get the best price (usually 90 days in advance). You can save sometimes 50% on train tickets doing this.
